Road to Recovery

Within two hours Lindsey was at Stevie’s and waiting for the nurse to put in all of the correct drips that were needed to sedate her for the next two days, when she had finished she told Lindsey some things he would need to do

“She will be sedated but not massively, which means there is a good chance that she will wake up at some point in the next two days, if this happens you press this button right here” she pointed to a triangular button on the monitor next to Stevie’s bed “It will give her a slightly larger amount than what’s running through the drip now, this means it should send her back to sleep” Lindsey nodded

“What if she doesn’t want to go back to sleep? What do I do then?” he asked

“It doesn’t matter what she wants right now it’s what she needs that is the priority here”

“Okay got it, Oh by the way, would it be okay to sleep in the same bed still or am I not allowed to?” he asked curiously

“No you’re perfectly okay to sleep in the same bed, as long as you don’t knock any of the tubes out” she smiled

Once she had asked if he had any more questions, she took her things and left the house, leaving Lindsey in a empty place with a sedated Stevie

He did some things around the house that he thought needed doing, he knew that really nothing needed doing but he just needed to busy himself with something otherwise he would just be sitting watching Stevie

Sometime later he decided he didn’t want to be away from her any longer and went upstairs to just talk to her, he knew very well she wouldn’t answer him but he just need to

He walked up to the side of the bed and sat down on the floor, he sat with his back against the bedside table so he was facing the wall like she was, this way it was easy for him to lace is fingers through hers

“I think your house is pretty spotless now Steph, I’ve cleaned the whole thing twice, and cleaned things that didn’t need cleaning” he laughed now

“Hopefully I’ve made you proud, because I feel that I don’t do it that often” he added

He looked over and up at her

“Oh no this won’t do” he got up from the floor and walked over to the side and picked up one of Stevie’s hairbrushes

He walked back over and slowly and lightly started to brush her hair, he knew she would hate it if she was seen with hair like she had; he brushed it so it looked perfect again, although whatever hair she had she would always look perfect to him

Lindsey realised that he probably should call Barbara and tell her what happened in case she tries to call Stevie

He dialled the number and smiled widely when she answered

“Hello?”

“Hey Ma” ever since the 70s Barbara had insisted on Lindsey calling her this because to her she was as much as her son as he could be

“Lindsey honey, hello, how are you?” she asked

“Yeah I’m good thanks just a bit tired” he answered

“Aw why what’s the matter?”

“Actually that’s what I wanted to talk to you about, something happened to Stevie” he heard her gasp

“What’s happened to Stevie? Is she okay?” she asked worried

“She collapsed earlier today and was rushed to hospital” he told her

“Oh my god”

“The doctor told me she has a very serious case of exhaustion, she’s home and she’s okay, and they only let me bring her home as long as I look after her 24/7 for the next week”

“Well can I speak to her?” she asked him

“No she has to be sedated for the next two days, but I’m going to take good care of her ma, I swear on my life on that one” she could hear the tears in his voice

“I know you will Lindsey and I thank you so much, I know you’ll do your best for my girl”

“Yeah I might not have in the past, but I will now” he told her

“The past is called the past for a reason son; it’s the present that you need to live for” she told him honestly

“Thank you”

“And thank you for letting me know, I’ll let you get back to her, just keep me updated” she sounded calmer than he felt

“Oh I will don’t worry”

“I’ll speak to you soon, love you Lindsey!” she told him

“Okay, and love you to!” and they hung up

He couldn’t believe what an amazing woman Barbara was, even after everything he put Stevie through, she still loved him like a son, and he still loved her like a mother

Lindsey knew it was finally time to go to sleep, he was exhausted after the day he had had, he got ready for bed and walked over to it

He climbed in and lay on his side, he leaned over and kissed Stevie the lightest of kisses on her unresponsive mouth

“Night, I love you” he told her and laid down, he was still on his side but it meant that he could reach his arm across and lay it over Stevie’s middle, all to soon he fell into a sleep

~

He didn’t know how long he had been asleep but something had woke him up, he laid still for a minute until he realised it was the person beside him that had done it

“Lind...sey” she tried but was mumbling

Lindsey switched on the lamp beside him and got out remembering what the nurse had said

He stopped next to the bed and stroked Stevie’s face

“Shhh...come on calm down baby”

“Lindsey” she couldn’t get anything else out past his name

“Shh, I’m just going to press this button and you’ll be back asleep again in no time honey” he noticed her panicked look

“No...Please...I don’t want to sleep...anymore” she tried to grab his hand

“It will be fine honestly; it will make you feel right again”

“I just want to be...asleep and not sedated...to sleep next to you”

“I’m sorry, but I have to Steph” he felt so torn right now

“Linds, please, baby...don’t do this to me...I’m begging you” she began to cry

He pressed the button

“How could you?” the last thing he saw before she closed her eyes again was the betrayed look that flew out from them

Sorry it's taken me a while to update this one, but I hope you enjoyed it and it was worth the wait :) xo
