Hope's POV

"Seriously what is wrong with you?" Jaliyah asks, giving me an odd look. "You've barely been paying attention and you have that dumb smile on your face." We've decided to eat our lunch inside the cafeteria today instead of outside on campus, and I duck my head as people give us weird glances at her loud outburst.

"Calm it down!" I laugh. "I just... had a good sleep. It's nothing."

"Right..." Yalimar drags as she bites into her burger. Luckily, I only share one class and lunch with her. I've been avoiding her questions about Damien, convincing her that we just had a civil conversation at her house, and I've made my peace with our breakup. Was it a lie? Yes. Did I care? Not really. I didn't want Cellie to find out because she'd never understand why I've chosen to forgive him and not her. I don't really understand it myself.

"I've done nothing wrong!" I protest as I bend to the side of my chair to pick up my bag from the floor.

Jaliyah gasps dramatically and I turn to find her looking at me with a shocked but giddy expression. "You lie! Lemme see!" She reaches for my hair and pushes it aside. I recoil in horror, feeling my face heat up.

"Stop it!" I place my hair back in place.

"Oh my God!" She's laughing and I beg her with my eyes to stay silent.

"What's going on?" Cellie asks from across us, pausing midway from eating her fries.

"Nothing." I say, forcefully pressing my foot onto Jaliyah's shoe. I reach into my bag for my phone before putting it back. If I text Damien now, Jaliyah would see and make a big show of it.

Jaliyah's eyes glint with malicious intentions, a smile still plaguing her lips. "I think Hope has a bruise or something. It looks really red. Almost purple, I think."

"What?" Cellie frowns.

"Nothing." I say through gritted teeth.

Yalimar raises her eyebrows, seeming to catch on. She glances between and smiles coyly. "So, Damien was at my house the other day."

"What?" Jaliyah and Cellie say in unison.

"What are you doing?" I hiss inconspicuously.

"Yeah," She continues with a wicked grin. "He asked me to lure Hope there so they could... talk." She wiggles her eyebrows.

"T-That's not true." I stutter.

"Then why are you blushing?" Jaliyah asks with a laugh. "I knew it was a hickey! I can't believe it! 'Dope' is back together!" She's laughing, oblivious to Cellie's solemn expression. I hate my friends.

"I'm not." I say in a low voice. Cellie glares at me and turns her gaze back to her food. Jaliyah finally notices the tension and stops smiling. She looks between us before leaning close to me.

"Wait are you still mad at her or..." I glare at her. The rest of the lunch period is met with awkward silence.

Yalimar mouths sorry a few times before giving up when I shoot death glares at her. The bell rings and I quickly get up, bumping my knee under the table.
