Grace takes a step back. I roll my eyes, somehow, I knew she would try and back out.
"Grace, come on, we've all done it already, it's not that bad." Annie says.
"Yeah, I mean, the water is cold, but we'll go home as soon as you jump." Danielle says.
"I'm freezing, Grace." I snap. "And we dared you, remember? You can't back out."
"You can't force me to do anything."
"If you back out, I'll never let you live this down." I say. She glares at me. I lean in. "If you back out, I'll tell them where you really were last semester." She tenses.
"You wouldn't." She mumbles.
"Oh yes, I would. I'll tell them that you just couldn't handle it, so you had to go and stay somewhere, that you didn't go on some fancy vacation."
"Fine, I'll do it."
"Good." She goes to the edge of the platform.
"I can't do it, I'm sorry." I shrug.
"Fine." I turn to face Danielle and Annie. "So, you remember last semester? When Grace said she was...."
"Shut up, Raven!" She yells.
"She wasn't on vacation last semester, she was in a rehab facility." Grace growls in frustration and shoves me. I yelp, stumbling. I whirl around. "Are you kidding me?! I could have fallen!"
"I didn't want anyone knowing that!" She screams, tears running down her face. "You promised you wouldn't tell!"
"Guys, stop!! Grace, it's ok, it's not a big deal!" She goes to shove me again, and I grab her wrists.
"I dare you to shove me again. I'll kill you."
"Raven, stop!" Annie yells, her voice strained. I let go of her wrists, shoving her away. She stumbles back, feet slipping on the wet platform. Her eyes go wide and her arms fly out in front of her. Danielle and Annie realize what's about to happen before I do, and they run forward, try to grab her, but it's too late. She falls over the edge, her scream cuts off when she hits the water. My entire body goes numb, I feel sick.
"I didn't mean to...."
"Oh my God, Oh my God." Danielle yelps. Her and Annie start down the ladder.
"She's messing with us!" I snap. I look over the edge. Grace is floating face down, blood pooling out around her. I ignore the fear I feel and go down the ladder. Annie wades into the water, Danielle behind her. Together, they pull Grace from the water. Once she's out, I see the way her neck is bent, I can see the gash on her forehead.
"She's not breathing!" Annie says, her voice cracking. Danielle takes her phone out.
"What are you doing?" I grab it.
"I was going to call 911! Give me my phone back!"
"No! We are not calling anyone. We need to go."
"Are you serious? We can't just leave her!"
"She's dead! Do you realize how much trouble we'll get into?"
"You're the one who pushed her." Annie says.
"Yeah, you can leave her if you want, but we aren't." Danielle reaches for her phone again, and I chuck it into the lake. "What is wrong with you?!" She shoves me and I fall onto the sand.
"Let's just say it was a dare gone wrong." Annie says. "We don't have to say she was pushed, we don't have to say anything about the argument."
"Alright." I say. "Yeah, good idea. We need to agree on a story."
