“Red- 24! Red 24! Hut! Hut! Hike!” as they snapped the ball, “Snap! Crackle! Pop!” the sound it made as it collided with grass and morning dew. “Ring! Ring!” the phone call I got that morning the voice on the other side low and gasping
“Hey Hung?”
“Yes...”
“Can you pick me up?”
“Why, what’s up?”
“I think I broke my foot, my parents aren’t picking up.”
“Where you at?”
“Football”
Inching out from under the sheets, snaking my way out of the habitat, avoiding the sun as if I was a creature from a cheesy night flick. With my half bloodshot eyes, aches and pains from the night before, I reached for my glasses and keys as I went out the door.My hand grasped the cool door handle, a shiver ran up my arm and transferred to my spine jolting me awake. Shaking it off I climbed into a mechanical beast, feeling as if I was still in a distant land far from this one as I pulled out to pick up my friend. I was still in a haze, as I sank into the warm leather of the seats while the soft humming of the engine that blended into the background, and my hands subconsciously work the wheel. My mind struggled to stay awake. It began to wonder why I was awake, why do I have to pick up a friend who only calls when he needs something. These questions would remain unanswered.
As I turned into the school, he was sitting there. A gentle giant with a mouth that doesn’t know when to stop talking and now was no exception. The gentle giant had a foot fairy with him. The foot fairy was not small but was small compared next to the giant. The giant hobbled into the car with some assistance from the fairy.
“What took you so long?” the Giant asked.
“I was asleep.”
“Hey, could you drop me off at my house?” the fairy questioned,
“Sorry, I have to be home,” I said trying not to be a jerk.
The Fairy was his counterpart, a sneaky trickster. He only helped the giant to escape, Dante’s inferno that they called football practice a mutual relationship, a partnership, but the ferry men wasn’t about free rides to strangers. As I drove home there was a stale air dense with pain I asked if he wanted to go to the hospital but was answered with engine noises. "Chop, Yum." The Giant shed his sheeps skins to reveal a hungry monster and I its prey.
