I woke with a start and stared around, looking for my father. When I realized I was in my room,I collapsed back onto my bed wiping the cold sweat off my brow. I pulled on a tank top and some shorts and ran down to the gym.
It was empty, no one was there, not my mother or brother, and thankfully not my father . I hung up the punching bag and started hitting it as hard as I could. " is that you sis?"someone asked from behind me. I jumped, but turning around I could see it was just my brother, "nightmares?" he asked sympathetically. I nodded, and he walked over to me,enclosing me in his arms and stroking my hair. I broke down in his arms and cried on his shoulder." It's okay,he's not coming back... your safe here I won't let anyone hurt you ever again" he whispered to me.
I pulled myself together, giving my brother a hug." Thankyou" I said quietly, "I shouldn't have lost control". "It's okay to be sad sometimes " he replied. I nodded in response, not meeting his eyes. "Want to spar?" He asked. I nodded slowly. Remembering how my dream started, before shaking my head. I picked my favourite sword, it had a thin long blade, and smooth handle that fit comfortably in my grip. Though it was obviously dull. Kyle picked his sword and stood across from me with his sword raised.
He struck first but I recovered quickly and fought back. He attempted to flick my blade away from me but I blocked and distracted him by aiming a blow at his stomach, he blocked and I faked a strike at his leg. He tried to block, but I flicked my blade up,knocking his sword out of his hand instead. "I win " I grinned. "Again" he sighed, looking fake sad. We both laughed. But I jumped when the screen door slid open.
I sighed in relief when I saw my mom." You two hungry?" She asked poking her head inside. I nodded, "French toast eggs?" I requested hopfully. "Of course" she said heading back to the kitchen a by cutting through the yard.
I went upstairs, sending a small smile my brothers way before I left. I changed into a yellow and white striped crop top and some navy shorts, braiding my hair before heading back downstairs. My mom made my scrambled ends with French toast batter, and put it on a plate for me with some buttered toast. I ate quickly before Running outside to climb. "If you're going back out side grab the mail" my mom called after me.
"Sure thing" I shouted over my shoulder. I ran around the house to the street. The mailbox was overflowing with mail, I sorted through it as I walked back towards the house. A Post card from aunt Florida, newspaper, bill, another bill, a letter for Kyle , and a letter for... Me? I ran to the house and through the door into the kitchen . Throwing the other mail on the table I went to stand beside my brother. Handing him his letter as I tore open my own.
"It's a scholarship for a place called... The school for the skilled?" I said, looking at my mom. "Same here"my brother said reading his letter . "Did you apply for a scholarship?" My mother asked. I shook my head, and saw my brother doing the same. Kyle shook out his envelope, and I hurried to do the same when a brochure fell out of his. "It's a nice campus" I said, examining it. "There's riding, swimming, a gym, skating, archery, and... Fencing!"I said squealing excitedly.
"Can I go? Can I go? Pleeeaase?" I begged. My mom sighed, "is there a set age?" She asked. I glanced down at the brochure, "fourteen" I said, before glancing down quickly again to make I read it right. "But... I'm only twelve" I said. Mom looked shocked, "but... I got the letter" I said. "I guess you can both go, but Kyle, you have to keep and eye on sister, like seriously!" She said, emphasizing the have to. I rolled my eyes, Kyle had turned fourteen a few months ago but I'm not that young still." I can take care of myself mom" I sighed. "I know baby, but it can't hurt can it?" She asked stroking my hair.
"fine" I sighed, prolonging the word." Good girl" my mom said kissing my cheek. Now I think you two need to get packed, there is a train in Chicago in two days that goes to the campus". I nodded and jumped on my mom, strangling her with a hug, before running upstairs to my room" thanks mom!" I shouted as I ran. It was time to pack.
