What if hobbits were something akin to vampires? They lived much longer than most thought and had the sharpest of fangs. Hobbits however, instead of being weak to heat, they thrived in it, they could not be burned even by the strongest of flames, that's why Bilbo was chosen after all. On the downside, they are very sensitive to the cold, why else would their hearths always be lit? The fell winter was harder than it would be on the Hobbits for this very reason.
