Alexa's POV:
Flashback
"Run please, just run faster," I shouted in fear to the little girl gripping my hand tightly.
I looked back to see how many zombies were following us. There were ten corpses getting closer by the minute. My plan was to head over to the old coffee shop I had worked at when I was a teenager. Making a rapid left on Elm Street, we bumped into a zombie. It was a woman, with a noticeable bite mark on her cheek. She stumbled back, nearly falling. The poor lady was missing her clothes and shoes. She looked directly to the little girl holding my hand with eyes laced with hunger. Without hesitation, she charged towards the girl with her arms wide open.
I stood still petrified as I looked at the girl who was trying to push the woman away. Her cry for help brought me back to reality as I tried to pull her away from the dangerous woman. I managed to kick the zombie in the stomach making her fall back. I don't know where the strength came from, but I picked up the little girl and ran towards the coffee shop.
I attempted to pull the door open, only to find that it was locked. I could clearly see there was a man standing inside so I banged on the door, hysterically crying for help. I looked behind me to see a herd of about 15 zombies getting closer with each passing second. They were only twenty feet away. I was going run again, but my prayers and shouting were answered as the man walked towards the door to open it. Setting the young girl down in the darkest part of the place - near the kitchen - I quickly made my way back to lock the door.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" I shouted to the man wearing a white t-shirt and camouflage pants. "You were going to let us die?" I asked still in a state of fear. "Jerk," I mumbled.
"I opened the door, didn't I? You're both alive and safe." He assured the little girl and me.
I made my way over to her and asked "Honey, what's your name?" I could see the fear, shock, and distress in her soft caramel colored eyes.
"My name is Jessa," she answered with a brittle voice.
"Have either of you been bitten or scratched?" The man demanded. I looked over at him and stood up.
"Why don't you leave us alone," I suggested as I walked closer to him. "Please, we want nothing from you," I begged.
As he looked down at me, I could see a slight disappointed look in his deep blue eyes. He seemed like a helpful guy, but I didn't want to risk anything by trusting the wrong people. The apocalypse started two days ago and I was still trying to wrap my head around everything that had been happening.
"Okay, let me make this clear. If both of you are going to stay here with me, then I need to check for bites and scratches," he pointed out while making his way over to Jessa.
I didn't want to stir up an argument, so I stood next to him while he checked for any type of wound. He asked her to stand up with arms wide open. He checked her tiny hands for scratches and her neck for bites.
"All done," he reassured Jessa. "You're next," he said while pointing at me.
I followed him to the kitchen where it was easier to see because of the 'EXIT' sign that hung above the back door.
"My name is Connor Winston," he introduced himself as he checked my arms, hands, neck and ankles. "I don't know how to say this, but your friend is infected."
