Chapter 2-

Connor POV

With adrenaline running through my veins, I pull up the garage door and went into combat mode.

"Go," I yelled to Alexa. Hearing the bones snap below the tires of the Jeep makes me cringe. The smell of disgusting rotting flesh that lingers throughout the block woke up all my senses, making me walk slowly and alarmingly.

A tall man wearing a blood-stained brown suit with holes on the knees and elbows became my first target. His face is sunken in, giving the impression that he starved before getting infected. His tinted yellow and unfocused eyes remind me of how deadly the virus is. I aimed and shot before he got the chance to get too close. The one bullet going straight between his eyes, making him tumble down another walker in the process.

I hear a grunt to my right and aim to shoot an elderly lady in a cream-color nightgown, with clearly visible chunks of flesh missing from her arm and shoulder. I shot six more walkers, who apparently were faster than the others.

"Come on Connor," I heard Alexa yell through the open door.

Seeing how close the zombies were to the Jeep, I made a run towards it.

Jumping in, I manage to close the door, but I didn't realize that I had caught the hand of a walker in between the door, until Katie screeched. My heart beating like the rumbling of thunder I open the door to let go of the zombie. It was only a kid around the age of 6. Damn. Witnessing dead little kids has to be the worst part of the apocalypse.

I turn around to see Tom and Julie try to comfort their daughter. She is hysterically repeating " oh my god" and tears escaping the corner of her eyes. Megan's head was down, supported by the palms of her hands.

"Which way should I go?" Alexa questioned with a frightened, yet confident look. She accelerated as fast as possible, hitting everything that came in the way.

I rapidly restored my attention to the map that had the directions to our next location.

"We need to take SC-5. Keep heading straight and I'll let you know when to turn" I replied, observing the neighborhood we were leaving behind through the side mirror.

The drive from Rock Hill South Carolina to White Oak North Carolina is a span of three hours on the highway. We had the average delays with vehicles that blocked the streets and zombies. The detours and stops we had to do to clean up the roads and add gas made the trip seven hours long.

During the trip, we were able to siphon a couple of cars and Tom showed me how. He used two small clear tubes and an old rag to seal the tank of any air. He then blew air into one tube and the gas miraculously came out the other tube. I also learned that it's extremely hard to siphon gas from modern cars, so we went for 1990's vehicles.

While navigating to find a safe place for tonight, I could hear Alexa's stomach growling in hunger. "Are you hungry?" I asked, realizing we must all be starving from not eating anything.

"Hmm, I bet we all are," she whispered, trying not to wake up the folks sleeping behind. "Do you see a place that we can stay at tonight?"

I looked through the empty neighborhood, studying each house. We usually tried to go to the houses that have no car in the driveway. It gives us a chance of having no people or zombies inside.

"Turn to the left where it says dead end," I answered. "That house," I suggested as I pointed to the small yellow house with a tall white picket fence and no car in the driveway.

Tapping Tom on the knee, I let him know we arrived and to get ready to search the house. I liked to have Tom and Alexa with me while we search the house and Julie, Megan, and Katie stay outside, watching for any zombie that might be lurking around.
