*honk honk*
We are so caught up in the moment that we don't realize that we're standing in the street. I nod apologetically to the car and quickly walk to the side walk.
"Maybe we should go somewhere less dangerous to talk," Lane says with a laugh. "There's a park around the corner." he motions for me to follow him.
We arrive at the park. Instantly, a thousand memories come to mind. I come to this park on my good days. Days that I feel hopeful, like I might want be part of this world. He leads me to a taco truck and orders a taco. "Are you hungry?" Any normal person would probably not eat with a stranger, but having not eaten since yesterday, I would probably eat the left-overs from someone's tray at McDonalds (would most definitely not be the first time that would happen.) I told the man my order while Lane paid. We sat on a park bench. I sat at one end, he sat at the other. "So you're probably wondering why I was standing by your house or why I ran after that homeless man."
"Just a little bit." I said genuinely curious and slightly freaked out.
"Ehrm... I wasn't really prepared to tell you this. It might be a little bit hard for you to wrap your head around at first. I'll just start at the beginning. Before you were born, your mom already had plans to put you up for adoption. She didn't want you to see her depressed, but she also didn't want to leave you unprotected. I was only three when you were born, but my parents could already tell that I was... different than other kids my age. My IQ was higher than any three year old that had ever been tested. I also took martial arts and was well on my way to receive my black belt at that time. My parents met your mom at a party while she was pregnant, where my overly proud parents told your mom about me. She came up with the idea. She told my parents about her dilemma and asked if I could look after you, like a protector. In return, she would share part of her prescription pills with them, a deal they couldn't refuse." He looked away from me at the last part, hurt and embarrassed. "When I was ten, both of my parents died after taking too many of the pills your mom supplied to them. I was sent to live with my grandparents. By this time, I had grown attached to you. I knew that somehow I had to get back to you. Night after night I had dreams about you being hurt... nightmares rather. That all changed when my grandparents were killed in a car wreck with me in the back seat. I was pretty much unharmed except for being cut from glass." He lifted up his shirt revealing several large scars on his otherwise perfect abs. Then he showed me his arms that were scattered with zigzagged lines. "It still hurts sometimes. There was no documentation of me living with my grandparents. When the car crashed, I snuck away from the scene before anyone noticed. Ever since, I have had regret for leaving my grandparents but it was worth being back to protect you. When I returned you didn't carry yourself the same and weren't as social. You were more sad than before. All that I could do was watch you live in pain. I still did all that I could, though. Times when you were very hungry, I would leave what money I could scrounge up in random places for you to find. Any pervy guys who talked about you learned to never lay a hand on you. I protected you from afar. I saw you today at school, in the corner crying. Nobody else did. I decided it was best to keep an eye on you. I tried to find a way to get to the second floor, to your room, but all of your windows are locked and you have curtains. Needless to say, when you came out of the house, I could finally breathe. When that filthy old man tried to steal from you, my first instinct was to protect you."
I couldn't think of anything to say. How was I suppose to react to this?
"Rayn, say something." But I didn't. Instead I buried my head in his shoulder and cried (good going, Rayn.) His arms instantly covered me. I feel safe... a relief of some sort... like his arms shelter me from anything that could hurt me. Like I finally have somebody who is on my side.
