We stay like this for over ten minutes. I never want to leave this shelter. Our bodies fit together like puzzle pieces. Warmness fills me. Soon, a thought occurs to me.
"Do you know where my mom lives?" A moment of hesitation and disappointment appeared on his face.
"No. After you were born, your mom left. She never told us where she was going."
"But you said that your parents got their pills from her, right? If she didn't live here she must have sent them in the mail."
"I don't know. I was only ten when all of this went on. Plus, those pills made my parents act... different. I usually shut myself in my room whenever my parents took them."
Why did I even bring his dead parents up? I feel like a complete bitch. After all, I don't even know him that well. Yet, I feel completely comfortable around him.
"But wait. I think I have an idea." He says hopping up from the bench enthusiastically. "Follow me."
He leads me to an old, broken down SUV in a parking lot down the street and unlocks it. Inside I see piles of blankets and fast food trash. I catch him blush before he can look away.
"Welcome to my, ehrm, home." He opens the door to the passenger side and clears a spot.
"My lady." he says extending a hand to help me up. I hop in and he gets in the driver's seat. "I kept some of my parents things, including a stack of letters. Maybe there's a letter from your mom in it." He reaches into the glove box and looks through them. His mouth curves into a smirk as he hands me a letter.
Dear Mr. and Mrs. Willis,
I am sorry to inform you that I will no longer be able to supply you with your due payment as I have been admitted into a rehabilitation facility. This is the reason for the address change on the envelope. However, I hope that Lane finds enough goodness in his heart to continue to look out for Rayn. If she is anything like I am, she needs it.
Sending my gratitude,
Lynn xx
As I read the last few words of the letter, I could tell that it was from Mom. I spotted another letter behind it.
Miss Sanders,
I'm afraid that Lane can no longer be of service to you. We are not in the business of giving out favors to every poor soul in need. We had an agreement when we met you, did we not?
Sincerely,
Mark, Cathy, and Lane
Lane grew pale as he read the letter over my shoulder.
"What's wrong?" I ask.
"I haven't been completely honest with you. Remember how I told you my parents overdosed? Well, that's not really how they died. I...I killed them."
A lump forms in my stomach and I immediately look for a way out of this car.
"But Rayn, I would never hurt you. You're the reason that I did what I did. All my parents told me was that I was no longer aloud to protect you. How could I let that happen? How could I never be able to help you anymore? Several times I escaped the house to get to you. They eventually found out and put up a security system. One day after seeing you at school I told my parents that I had to see you. You looked much like you did today. Sad and lonely. My parents refused to let me out of the house and it started to get physical. My dad pulled out a gun and I had to react. For him it only took one blow to the head before he crashed to the ground, dead. When he hit the ground he pulled the trigger which hit my mom. I didn't mean to," he said with painful tears in his eyes.
He was sincere. This times, he was the one crying, and I was the one holding him. We sat there together for many minutes, a killer in my arms. A killer that killed for me.Hey guys! It's me again. I'm finally back from the busy past few weeks. I had finals and a whollllllle lot of projects. They're finally over and I'm ready to be off for two more weeks so that I can write some more. Leave a comment saying what you're doing for winter break and how you did on your final exams. xx
