Chapter Five

A couple more years had passed. And she had only gotten more popular. Known for being the individual who was ruthless. But soft to those in need.

Grabbing up supplies, she went to her mother's home. Her mother was doing very well. And she was proud of it. She had moved her mother to a safer part of the city. Somewhere more guarded by MPs. When she got there, she slid inside and greeted her mother in the kitchen. Giving her a kiss on the cheek as she started to make sure she had everything she needed.

"Mom. Today's the day."

"Already- Oh, dear, Ailani. I'll miss you so much. Please be careful."

"I will."

"And tell that Levi friend of yours, he has my blessing if he wants to propose-"

"Mom!"

Looking up from her bag, she looked at her mother with slightly reddened cheeks. Her mother had met her squad on several occasions. And she was strangely fond of Levi. Though, Ailani could admit. The man was charming.

"What? I like that boy."

"Mom. I have to go. I promise, I'll write to you."

She walked over and gave her mother a tight hug. Then left in a dash.

She paid her way through, and there she was. The surface. The sun was blinding. She made arrangements to have a horse waiting for her. A beautiful brown stallion. She mounted him, and started her way off to the city. The wind in her hair felt liberating. It was amazing. This is what she worked so hard for. And she finally has it. And she knows exactly what she's going to do first.

Arriving into one of the walled cities, she dismounted her horse and pulled her hood on. Looking around. The hustle and bustle of the people was oddly comforting. No fighting. Or children running from adults in a negative way. She was in the process of buying a small load of bread to eat when she noticed people starting to separate down the main road. She pushed her way through to get to the front and looked. Horses. Green capes. Some people being carried in wagons.

"What the hell..?"

Ailani mumbled quietly to herself as watched them walk down and past her. Oh. There he was.

They locked eyes. The girl's piercing green eyes narrowing as she stared that man down. Eyebrows. How nice to see you again.

And then she saw the other him. Her eyes nearly watering as she smiled. He probably didn't see her, so she grabbed her horse and mounted. Following behind them to go wherever they were.

She had to sneak past guards to get in. Tying her horse up at a nearby tree. She knew that undercut from a mile away. Walking up behind him, she grabbed hold of his shoulder. He whipped around and swung, but she caught his fist in her hand. Still fast with his reflexes she sees.

"Levi! Calm down, it's me! Ailani!"

When he finally saw her face up close, he actually showed some emotion this time. She let his arm go, and the moment she did, he was engulfed in a hug. That girl put her all into that hug. Having missed him so much.

"How'd you get out..?"

"With the money I earned."

Slowly pulling away from him, she looked him in the face and smiled. Afterwards, he didn't say a word. Taking her hand and leading her inside of the large base. Down the halls, and to his.. office? He closed the door behind her once she was inside and looked her up and down.

"Ailani. Why'd you come here?"

It was a strange question to ask in her mind. She thought it was obvious. She turned to look at him, her arms going outwards to gesture to him.

"To be with you again! And Izzy. And Farlan- Where are they? I haven't seen them."

The air in the room grew cold. Colder than she had ever been before. The dark haired man moved from the door to the large oak wood desk. He took a seat on the opposite of the desk and put his hands together. The fists formed being placed on his lips. He took a deep breath. Something told Ailani, she should probably sit down. So she took a seat across from him.

"They're dead."

Those two words. Felt like knives piercing through her chest. It was worst than any beating she had ever experienced. Any stab wound she ever received. No. Nothing could compare to the ache and sudden jolt of pain she felt at the moment. She clutched her chest and looked at him in disbelief. Shaking her head at him.

"No.. They can't be.. It wasn't that long. We were supposed to all be together.. Why didn't you tell me sooner.. Write a letter. Something."

"I didn't know how to tell you."

Blunt as ever. Tears welled up in her eyes. Already, this is not the reunion she expected to have. Biting back the tears, she took a deep breath.

"How'd they die?"

"..Expedition gone wrong. Titans got to them."

"Thought so.. I'm joining."

She could be blunt as well. Looking at after sucking it up. Now it was his turn to not believe her.

"Join what?"

"The military. The Survey Corps to be exact. I'm joining. And there's nothing you can say or do. To stop me."
