Chapter Two: The Darkness

Flashback:

It was a crisp December night in the Kingdom. A frost was predicted to fall which Queen Evelyn was fascinated by. Finding herself wanting to take a walk in her Gardens so she can experience the change with nature itself. The Queen had finally found a moment after putting her daughter, Jasmine, to bed. Walking the Gardens was something she had done since her arrival at the grand castle. Providing her a serene place to think about the day. After their marriage, the King and Queen had tried to make a habit of taking a walk at least once a month. Sliding on her fur coat, and lacing up her boots Queen Evelyn eyed her husband.

"Something on your mind, my King?" She asked, gliding over to him. Her slender arms sliding over his broad chest as her head rested against his shoulder. To which he just brought his golden eyes to look up at her.

"No, nothing really." King Briafael sighed, wrapping his arms around her thin waist. A line of worry etched into his forehead. "Must you go outside tonight?" A chuckle left her lips as she nodded.

"It is a magical process. To have the ice coat everything....it creates a beautiful encasing on receding life." Queen Evelyn explained, the smile growing wider on her lips. A thought forming in her mind. "Why don't you join me?"

The King shook his head, more out of humor than anything. "You know, that sounds-" Just as he was about to finish his statement a Page interrupted him.

"Sorry, Your Majesty. But two beings say they have urgent matters to discuss with you." The Page informed him, bowing his head as he awaited his master's command on what to do.

Evelyn sighed, the King thought his options over. His country was meant to come first. Though he felt strongly about the love of his life. "My dearest, I will join you in a moment. Take a guard and let me not keep you waiting. I am assured this will go over quickly." The Queen kissed her King, nodding to a nearby guard.

"I shall be awaiting you." With that, the Queen and Guard went out while the King and Page went into the throne room. A room that had smooth linoleum flooring, and elaborate gold walls. The King made his way to his throne, which was much larger than the one to his right, which was meant for the Queen. On the left side was a smaller one that was made to fit the Princess. The King looked at his two guests, realizing they were danskers. Danskers were an other-worldly being as they were a cross between a zombie and a werewolf. On a full moon, their werewolf side took over, making them look much like decaying animals. Other than that these beings blended in with society quite well. Something that annoyed some of the more snooty royals.

"Thank you for meeting with us so late." The Dansker on the left said, bowing his head with his companion following his lead.

"Yeah, yeah get on with it. What is so important that you've interrupted the Queen and I?" He asked, his golden eyes holding scrutiny while his posture stayed poised and perfect.

"Right. We've come to discuss the darkness that is spreading throughout your kingdom. Each day the sun shines just a bit less. People are turning on each other. Perhaps you have not noticed?" The Dansker on the right informed him. Questioning the King's concern was a bold move. Seeing how he kept the citizens from arguing about their kind being allowed in the capital. Though he was feeling rather forgiving at the moment.
