5 in the afternoon I came home and threw down my bag as always and started up stairs to my room when I was stopped by my mother.
"Miss Richards will be by to check on you every once in a while so please open the door, don't have me worrying about you child because I will come back." I rolled my eyes.
"mama, I'm 14, not a baby I will be just fine you just gone be gone for 2 days, you know you can trust me...go have fun." She dragged her suitcase to the door and looked at her watch then me. "maybe I shouldn't go." I sighed "I know you need this, go have fun with your old friends?" "Old?" she asked grinning "not old like old, old like old classmates."
"If your father was here he would not be trying to go at all." I gave her a side smile. My dad died about three years ago when I was 11, he got suddenly ill and was gone in a matter of months. He was the smartest man I knew, a history teacher at the local high school and treated my mother like a queen. I knew exactly how I wanted my husband to treat me watching him. He was the person that named me ...Egypt, He had an obsession with African Culture and all things black. He taught me of our history and the first civilization and how we were kings and queens before bondage, which made me obsessed with the place.
My mother was a wreck for about a year and lately things had finally started to get a little normal as she adjusted to being a single mother. We heard a horn blow outside and my mother glanced to her watch again.
"That's my ride." She sighed staring at me.
I walked over and hugged her. She held me tight, and longer than I cared for. When I tried to pull away she held tighter. She pulled back looking into my face and brushed the hair out of it.
"You look so much like him. I love you so much Egypt, do you know that?" I smiled
"I love you too... go enjoy yourself." I coaxed.
the horn sounded again she grabbed her bag and walked toward the door.
"See you Sunday." She said pressing two fingers to her lips then toward me. I did the same in return.
I walked to the door and watched her load into the car while the driver loaded her luggage. The car pulled away and she waved goodbye I waved in return watching the car till it disappeared from site. When I closed the door, moments later the phone began to ring. I walked over to pick up the house phone from the hook.
"James Residence." I spoke into the phone
"Hey hoochie." a high-pitched voice squeaked on the other end.
"damn my mama literally just left." It was my best Friend Nadia. She was a free spirited Puerto Rican and black around the way girl.
"sorry I was just so excited, I can't wait to get away from this zoo!" she yelled something in Spanish to one of her little brothers then continued. "so is it safe to come now?"
I laughed "yeah man c'mon" she lived at home with her dad and 3 little brothers so she craved girl bonding time.
My mother specifically told me she didn't want me to have any company, but Nadia wasn't company she was family, I convinced myself.
We got off the phone and I grabbed my bag and trotted up to my room. I put on my sweats and volleyball T. and laid in my bed and turned on the new Amerikkka's most wanted cassette

that I loved so much and wrote in my journal until Nadia arrived. When she got there we did the usual prank phone calls, each others hair and watching Nickelodeon.
Nadia made a call on my room line.
"ok here we come" she replied to whoever she was speaking to then hung up.
