After finishing the pizzas, Sam and Mackenzie continued to sit in the pizzeria to catch up with each other. Sam told her about his college life and then losing his girlfriend the same way he lost his mom. He then explained how he left that life behind to hit the road with Dean to look for their father.
Mackenzie told him about some of the cases she had been on the last few years but left out her past with Dean and her father's death. It wasn't that she didn't trust Sam or anything, she just wasn't ready to talk about the second worst day of her life- the first being losing her mother and baby sister all those years ago.
After realizing they lost track of time and a couple of hours had passed, they stood up from the table and agreed it was time to head back to the motel. The two argued briefly on who would pay until she suggested they flip a coin. He laughed, then called heads when she flipped a quarter in the air before catching it.
Seeing that he won- meaning she had to pay- she flashed him a smug smile before she dropped some money on the table. He offered to pay for her motel room since she paid for the pizza, which caused another playful argument between the two when they walked out of the restaurant.
As soon as they arrived back at the motel, the next few minutes were spent renting a room for Mackenzie. She had the option to rent the room beside the brothers or taking one several rooms away. She picked the latter, causing Sam to shoot her a bored look, earning an innocent shrug back from her. He shook his head, realizing she wasn't kidding before about wanting to stay away from Dean.
After getting her settled in the room, Sam made his way down to his own room- knowing he needed to tell Dean about asking her to join them. He figured it was best to just get it out in the open, like ripping off a band-aid, he just hoped it was easier to convince him than it was her.
Hearing the motel door crack open, Dean glanced at the time on the alarm clock beside his bed- something he had been doing every few minutes since Sam left with Mackenzie. He scoffed when he saw how much time had passed.
He knew he shouldn't let it bother him, Mackenzie was just a fling from his past. He obviously meant nothing to her, so she meant nothing to him, but he couldn't deny it got under his skin that she just spent so much time with his brother when all he got was a sore jaw from the punch she gave him earlier in the woods.
"How was your date?" he asked sarcastically when Sam walked into the room.
"It wasn't a date, Dean, and you know that." He rolled his eyes and sat down on the end of the other bed to remove his shoes.
"I'm just saying be careful with her." Dean flipped through channels on the television, hoping he sounded nonchalant since on the inside he was a mess. His mind was racing and his stomach was churning at the thought of the two together.
"It was nothing like that, I just wanted to catch up with her...that's all," Sam explained. "But there is something I wanted to talk to you about." He turned to face his brother, then lowered his head for a moment and ran a hand through his hair as a nervous gesture.
"Don't tell me you screwed her too?" He sat up in bed. The feeling in his stomach intensified when his mind imagined a quick flash of the two in bed together. He told himself that meant nothing though, he was just looking out for his brother- the anger he felt was not jealousy.
"What? No." He jerked his head up. Realizing what his brother said, he added, "Wait, what do you mean 'too'? Did you do it with Kenzie?"
"'Do it'?" he repeated with a mocking tone. "What are we in second grade or something? You can't say the word sex?" He shot him a serious look. "You know, they say if you can't say the word, that means you're not old enough to be having it, Sammy."
