Earlier the next morning, after having a few beers and calming himself down with a long drive, Dean returned to the motel room to find John awake and ready to go as he sat in the chair at the table reading the morning paper.
"Morning, son, have a good night?" John picked up a styrofoam cup and took a sip of the hot coffee inside.
Dean shrugged his shoulders and threw his clothes into a duffel bag. He wasn't in the mood to make small talk at the moment. In his opinion, his dad had nothing to say that he wanted to hear now.
"I had an interesting night, thanks for asking," John said sarcastically as he sat the newspaper down, then stood up from the small table.
"Good for you," Dean mumbled, zipping the bag without turning to look at the older man.
"Mackenzie showed up looking for you and we had a nice chat." John folded his arms across his chest and waited to see how his son would react.
"Wait, Kenzie was here? When? What did she say?" Dean asked, firing out each question right after the other one.
John looked at the happy expression on Dean's face and knew instantly that his son had fallen hard for the Cole girl. He knew he should give Dean her message and let him go be with her, but the selfish side of him didn't want to lose another son- which was why he was about to do something that Dean would never forgive him for if he found out. He just hoped he never would find out the truth.
"She was just stopping by to tell you bye. She said she and Michael were heading out for a new case," John lied, feeling bad when he saw his son's face fall in disappointment.
"Oh," Dean quietly said as he realized what that meant. It meant that Mackenzie had decided to go with her father after all instead of him. He had hoped she would choose him, he was confident she would after what happened between them. He thought they had something, that they had bonded, but apparently it wasn't as strong for her as it was for him- apparently, he wasn't enough for her.
"Did she say anything else?" Dean questioned, but he wasn't hopeful.
John glanced at his son and almost came clean, but he just couldn't do it. "No that was it."
Dean tried not to let his disappointment show, but it was clearly evident on his face and actions as he picked up the duffel bag. Slightly turning toward his father, he muttered, "Okay, I'm ready to go."
After giving him a nod, John watched him walk out the door and over to the Impala. He knew what he did was wrong, but after losing Sam to the college life, he couldn't lose Dean to some girl- a girl in his opinion wouldn't even stick around anyway. Convincing himself that he was protecting his son, he finished his coffee, then grabbed his duffel bag before leaving the room.
Dean put his car in reverse and spun out of the parking lot, John climbed into his truck then pulled out after him as they both raced down the road, putting as much distance as they could from the town.
Hearing one of his favorite rock songs playing on the radio, Dean leaned forward to turn the volume up. He tapped his fingers against the steering wheel to the beat and tried to keep his mind free of Mackenzie, but was unsuccessful at it. No matter how many times he tried to push her image out, she kept creeping back in. He had no doubt her dark brown eyes and that dimpled smile would haunt him for years to come.
He blew out an annoyed breath and glanced in the rearview mirror for a moment, feeling his heart harden as his thoughts went to her once again.
Seeing his dad keeping pace with him, he couldn't help but remember something he told him the day before. As much as he hated to admit it, maybe he was right; the Coles were nothing but trouble.
