"Woodstar!! Greyclaw!! Somecat help me!!" I cried, running back to camp as fast as I could. "NightClan are attacking!" Cats spun round, eyes wide as I made my way into camp. I rushed to Woodstar's den. "Woodstar!" I mewed worriedly. The brown she-cat turned to me, a questioning look on her face. "NightClan are attacking! Well, a few cats are anyway. Me and Mouseheart were hunting, and a warrior was behind us, and Mouseheart asked him why he was there, and he's called Raveneye, and I started running to camp, and I looked behind me and.." I trailed off, hoping Woodstar understood. Her eyes were filled with worry. "Thank you for telling me, Rosepaw," she said. She strode out of her den, and onto the FallenTree. "Cats of WoodClan. Prepare for a NightClan attack!" she cried out.
Warriors started running around, looking for the NightClan cats, whilst apprentices rushed elders, queens and kits into the nursery and the dens. Woodstar turned to me. "Rosepaw," she said worriedly, "check that the kits, queens and elders are in the nursery or dens, and then fight with all your strength. Come to me if you need me." She turned and leaped off the FallenTree, running around with the warriors. For a couple seconds, I stood there in awe, thinking about what happened. I'd just been made an apprentice, and now my oldest sister, my mentor, was dead and our camp was being attacked. I shook myself. I needed to do my duties. I rushed off the FallenTree, and went to the nursery. There were terrified faces staring at me, filled with worry. "It's OK, everyone. We'll be fine," I mewed, trying to convince myself as well as the queens and kits. I sprinted out and went to the elders den, and checked they were all there. I stopped. Halfsight was gone. She was practically blind, so she could be anywhere. I decided to look for Greyclaw or Woodstar. They would know what to do. My eyes scanned the camp, which was full of unknown cats I thought to be NightClan. I started to focus on a tough grey tom, who had just raked his claws down a NightClan warrior's back. Greyclaw! I rushed towards him. "Greyclaw!" I shouted, "Halfsight's gone! I can't find her anywhere!" Greyclaw stared at me, extremely worried, for Halfsight was his mother. "Come with me, Rosepaw. Quickly," he said, rushing into the trees. I did as I was told, and followed him.
We went further and further, until we saw a motionless grey body, with a moving black body above it. "No!" Greyclaw cried, rushing over. I followed, to find that the body was Halfsight's. Greyclaw had already started attacking the black warrior, who was yowling in pain. I joined him, unsheathing my claws and raking them down the warrior's back. As he screeched, I recognised the voice as Raveneye's, the cat who had killed my sister. Fury and anger burned inside me, and I began to want Raveneye to feel pain, just like I had done. Raveneye hissed, and tried to throw me off his back. I clung on, and lifted my paw up to claw his face. He screeched again, and I lifted my head up to bite him. As I did so, my grip loosened, and Raveneye finally managed to get me off his back. He spun round and stood over me. He pinned my arms down and lifted his head up to bite me, just like I had done. Just as he was about to sink his teeth into my shoulder, his grip loosened and he yowled with anger. Greyclaw had stuck his claws in Raveneye's back, and looked like he wouldn't let go even to become leader of WoodClan. I gave him a grateful glance, and leaped at Raveneye. My claws dug deep into his flesh, and he screeched as I sunk my teeth into his forehead. He tried to scramble away, but failed, as my claws and teeth were too deep in. Eventually, I gave in and fell off Raveneye. He sprinted off, yowling in pain at his injuries. I decided to go over to Halfsight, to check if she was breathing. Luckily, I found she had simply been knocked out, and I turned to Greyclaw to tell him. "Greyclaw!" I mewed, "Halfsight's alive!" Greyclaw looked up hopefully, and rushed over to see his mother. "She's been knocked out," I explained to him. "Should I go and get Specklefang?" Greyclaw nodded, and licked Halfsight's forehead, trying to wake her up.
I rushed to camp and found Specklefang in her den, hastily sorting herbs. "Specklefang!" I panted. "Halfsight's been knocked out, and Greyclaw's with her. We need help!" Specklefang looked up at me and nodded. "Where is she?" she asked. I pointed with my nose towards the edge of camp. "Near the border," I answered. Specklefang grabbed her herbs, and signalled for me to lead the way. I rushed out of camp, and to where Halfsight was. Specklefang looked at her sadly, and I remembered how close they were when they were kits. Nevertheless, she got out her herbs and licked her to wake her up, as Greyclaw's attempt had failed. Halfsight's eyes began to open, and she started to breathe slightly easier. Specklefang nudged some leaves towards her, and mewed, "Eat them." Halfsight did so, and looked as if she was a bit more awake once she ate them. "I'll go back to camp and fight," I offered, knowing I was no use here. Greyclaw nodded, and I assumed he wanted to stay with his mother.
Once I got back to camp, I found that a lot of the NightClan warriors had fled. I saw a small, dark grey apprentice who seemed easy to take on. I launched at him, and hissed as I sunk my claws into his neck. He yowled, and scratched my face, making me yowl in return. However, I managed to keep my grip on him, and he struggled to get me off. I lifted my head up, and bit the top of his head, ignoring the screeching noises that were destroying my ears. He batted my face, and I lost my grip. He rushed away, supposedly back to his camp. Most of the NightClan cats had gone, and there were just some apprentices to deal with. I leaped at one of them, who hissed and almost immediately swiped at my face so he could flee. I decided to let go of him, as it meant there were less cats to take on. As I scanned the camp for more unknown cats, I found that the last of them were gone.
I saw Woodstar, and padded over to her. "Woodstar, who will my mentor be now that Mouseheart is dead?" I asked her. Woodstar thought for a moment. "Well, I'm not sure yet. You fought like a warrior today, but all the same you were apprenticed today, which is a rare happening. I shall give you a mentor at Moon-High, and of you build up your hunting skills, or fight like a warrior again, you shall be made a warrior." I blinked at her gratefully, and went to the fresh-kill pile to get a rabbit. Ivypaw was there too, getting a vole. "Hey, Ivypaw," I purred. Ivypaw looked up, and smiled. "Hi, Rosepaw! You were a great fighter today. I can't believe you fought off Raveneye!" I looked at him curiously. "Did Greyclaw tell you that, Iypaw?" I wondered out loud. Ivypaw nodded, and began to dig in to his vole. I decided to do the same, and tucked into my rabbit.
As it came to Moon-High, I got more and more excited. Woodstar finally called a ceremony. "May all cats old enough to catch their own prey gather round the FallenTree," she called. "Rosepaw," She beckoned me over. "Today, you fought like a warrior. But you were only apprenticed yesterday, so I'm afraid you are not becoming a warrior. But sadly, Mouseheart has fallen, and we all of course miss her. But this means you need a new mentor." She looked around at the warriors surrounding me. "We do not have any warriors without apprentices, so I am left with one choice." I looked at her curiously, wondering what she meant. "I shall be your mentor," Woodstar continued. My jaw dropped, and it took a couple seconds to take it all in. Woodstar, looked at me, her eyes gleaming with amusement. "This meeting is dismissed," she said, leaping towards me. I stared at her in awe, not really understanding what was going on. "You should go to bed, Rosepaw. You want energy to impress me, don't you?" she joked. I smiled, and obeyed, turning to the apprentice's den.
