"How did you know?" I asked, not sure I wanted the answer.
I thought I had been careful. I thought she was dead. I made sure of it. I made sure to cover my tracks.
"How did you know where to find me?" My voice is shaking.
She grins slowly at me. "Next time, you should make sure I'm dead before you tell people where you are going."
The color drains from my face. I don't know what to do. She starts walking towards me at a tauntingly slow pace. Tears stream down my cheeks. She abused me my whole life. I couldn't take it anymore. I was sure she was dead. Now here she is, bloodied and limping. The pain not seeming to affect her.
"Please." I beg. "What did I ever do to deserve this?" I'm sobbing now. "What did you do? WHAT DID YOU DO?!" She screeches. "After you were born, your father spent all his time with you! He hardly ever paid any attention to me. You're the reason we're divorced."
After the divorce, I was forced to live with her. I was very rarely allowed to see dad. Maybe she only let me see him, so that he would be happy, and so that she could see him.
"Is that why you killed him?" I choke through my sobs.
"I'm sorry. I'm so sorry. I didn't want you to hate me. I just wanted you to love me, but I couldn't take it anymore. I couldn't let you kill dad. Just because you can't have him, doesn't mean no one can. He doesn't belong to you."
Her face turns red with rage. "You little-." She throws a nearby lamp at my head. I barely manage to duck in time.
I keep backing up, now on the back patio of the cabin. It overlooks a cliff, but the railing doesn't go all the way around."I couldn't let you kill anyone else after what you did to dad." I say.
She lunges at me, tackling is both over the edge of the cliff. She doesn't seem to notice, too hell-bent on revenge.
Tears are streaming down my cheeks as I whisper, "I'm sorry."
