During the next week, I talk to Colby, Sam and Salina on telling Sam and Colby's friends about me. We decided that it would be better for them to know, so they can keep safe, and to have Salina with me when we tell them. So Sam and Colby called up Corey, Devyn, Jake, Tara and Kat to Sam's place. I sat quite still on the couch as we waited for them all to arrive. Salina was excitedly jumping next to me.
"Salina, calm down." I tell her.
Instead of just nodding and listening to me as I expected, she salutes me. "Yes, ma'am." She says. "Sorry, but I'm just excited."
"Why?" I ask. "They're more likely to be scared of us."
"Corey might be the most scared." Sam says, from in the kitchen. I look up to see him leaning against the counter, arms crossed.
"You seem upset." I say.
"I'm nervous." He answers.
"You have no need to be. If anything, Salina and I should be nervous."
"And Colby." Salina says.
I turn to her, raising my eyebrow in confusion. "Why's that?"
"'Cause y'all dating."
"What?" Sam asks, dropping his arms as he looks from me to his best friend. "You're dating?"
"Yeah." Colby says.
"I..." Sam's voice trails off. Then he nods. "Okay then."
I had to laugh. More like chuckle. Then I look to the door. "Someone's coming."
There was a knock on the door and Sam moves to open it. Kat, Devyn and Corey walk in.
"Hey, guys." Corey says. "What's with the, uh, urgency?"
"Yeah, that confused me. Is something wrong?" Kat asks, looking at Sam.
"No, nothing's wrong. Penelope actually has to tell us something." Sam answers. "We're just waiting for Jake and Tara now."
"Oh?" Devyn looks to me. "What is it?"
"I'll wait until everyone arrives." I tell her. Beside me, I hear Salina sniff the air quietly. I send her a warning glance.
Salina leans in, and in a quiet voice that only a vampire would hear, she says, "They all smell really good."
"You fed, right?" I reply, in an equally quiet tone. She nods. "Have you told the others what they should be doing?" I ask her as Kat, Devyn and Corey sit on the couch. Corey and Colby start talking about their next trip for the Sam and Colby channel.
"They have very specific instructions."
I nod. "Good." Then we look to the door again when another knock sounds. Sam opens it and Jake and Tara come in. They all sit down on the couch, greeting each other.
I Let them talk a little, catching up on their adventures on their channels, before Sam redirects everyone's attention to me.
"Penelope has something to tell us all." He says loudly, catching everyone's attention. Out of the corner of my eye, I see Colby grin. Kat leans her head on Sam's shoulder and Corey leans forwards, his hands folded together.
"So, Colby and Sam actually already know about this." I tell them.
"Is this what you've been not telling me?" I hear Kat ask Sam. Sam nods in reply.
"Wait, are y'all dating?" Corey asks, pointing at Colby and I.
I pause. "That's besides the point."
Corey raises his eyebrows. "Bro, I knew it. Nice." He fist bumps Colby and I roll my eyes.
"Sorry." Colby says, laughing a little.
"Before I tell you this, I need you all to be open minded. And I need you to remain calm. For not only my sake, but yours too." I say, looking each person in the eyes.
"Now I'm creeped out." Corey says.
"Babe, stop talking." Devyn scolds him.
"This entire time that you guys have known me, have you ever thought anything was strange about me?" I ask, not exactly sure how to tell them. "Anything that's not right?"
"I've never seen you eat." Jake says. There was silence following his words before Colby laughs.
"Actually, now that I think about it, I don't think I've ever seen you eat." Corey says.
"Yes." Salina says. "We don't eat human food."
Silence. Then, "What do you mean you don't eat human food?" Tara asks. "And what do you mean by human?"
"We're not human." I answer. "We were, long ago, but not anymore."
"I'm confused." Kat says, frowning.
I glance at Colby, silently asking for a little help. He nods, then turns to the others. "They're vampires."
