Rissa's POV
"...No way! He finally asked you out? How did that happen," I asked into my paint-splattered phone. It sat balanced between my shoulder and ear, precariously tilting as I bent to paint my toe a bright shade of red.
"Oh, god I wish you'd have seen it!" My best friend, Linux, gushed. In the week I had been away she had finally managed to get herself a boyfriend. "I was walking down to the green house talking with Molly and Amber when all of a sudden Molly started squealing. Naturally, like any sane person, I jumped into Amber's arms. The poor girl isn't like you, she had no idea I what I was about to do, so we fell onto the pavement. That's when I saw HIM!" I couldn't help but smile. I could just picture Linux's bright blue eyes widening in surprise. She would have scrambled up, dusting her newest fashion-forward skirt, and bitten her lip. She continued her story completely unaware I was flashing through our thirteen years of friendship, "It was Simon--you know "Sexy Simon", not "Smelly Simon"--and he was standing there with a bouquet of peonies! My favorite flower, and--"
"I thought your favorite flower was a Larkspur?" I interrupted. The line went quiet for a moment, something that rarely happened with Linux.
"...Well, okay so I hate peonies, but it's the thought that counts! Anyways as I was saying, he was standing there looking rugged and sexy. He has the most gorgeous brown hair, remember, and his eyes...oh Lord have mercy!...those beautiful brown eyes were just glittering. He was trying really hard not to laugh at me, and he had this little smile (made him like twenty times hotter) and he just asked me then." She let out another squeal and I could hear the thuds of her little feet hitting her bed in excitement.
I laughed and listened as she started jabbering about the rest of our friends and the drama she was going through without me. As she described the life she was now living without me, I felt a surge of homesickness come over me.
I missed my friends and our wild bonfire parties. I missed the winding roads, and rolling the window down to stick my hand into the wind. I missed the rows of towering corn and emerald green tobacco leaves. I missed my little house, buried in the rolling hills and the ancient oaks. I was almost sick with longing. Linux's voice faltered and I realized she was waiting for me to respond.
"What," I replied lamely.
She let out a snort, and I could picture her rolling her eyes. "I asked you how everything was across the Big Pond! I want to know everything," She repeated.
"Oh, where to start," I laughed. Honestly there was so much that had happened in the last week; I had moved in with my aunt, met the boyband One Direction, partied with them, and was actually becoming rather fond of them.
"Start with the house," Linux demanded. Some where on her end of the line a dog barked followed by a high pitched shriek of laughter--her dog, Barbados, and her younger sister, Lexie.
"It's beautiful! There is ivy crawling up the dark brown brick, huge victorian style windows, and its filled with all these cool little trinkets. Its quaint and quirky, and I absolutely love it! Oh, and my room has a raised studio," I announced. I heard Linux gasp, like me, she loved art. It was one of the reason we were such good friends; we could talk in colors, a language completely our own.
"So your aunt remembered you liked art? How do you like her," She asked a moment later, recovering from her minor spell.
I nodded before remembering Linux couldn't see it, " Yeah, she actually remembers a lot. Like the fact that I like ketchup on my beans, and that I tend to read upside down, and I have to sleep with a hundred blankets and pillows."
