Chapter 2

The girl, the girl, the girl…all I can think about. The only thing running through my mind was the look on her face as she tried to save me. It was too bad she couldn’t.  Too bad I’m dead. Too bad Jake had to get drunk, too bad everything. Is this what death feels like, nothing? I guess I should’ve seen it coming.  What was her name? I wonder. Did I even know her? Did she know me? Oh well, it’s too late now. Now I’m dead. Or at least I think I’m dead.  The sound of mumbling changes my mind. I can’t make out what the mumbling is, but it’s a person. Concentrate. Breathe. I think over and over. If I’m breathing, I must be alive.

“Adam,” I hear a girl say my name, it’s only faint. I’m trying to focus on who she is. She sounds like a young adult. I don’t really recognize her voice, “Adam, c’mon now, wake up.” I can sense that she’s close. “Adam, open your eyes,” she says softly. Her voice is angelic.  I try to open my eyes slowly so I don’t give myself an even worse headache than I already have. My vision is fuzzy and all I can see is a girl wearing a green uniform of some sort standing by me and an ugly green curtain that surrounds the room.

“There you go,” she says, “how are you feeling?”

I can’t really tell, I have a humungous headache and all of this crap attached to me is bugging me.

“Who are you?” I respond.

“My name is Alicia, I’m your nurse.” The sound of her voice is so soothing; it relaxes me just a little. I wish I could see her face but my vision sucks.

“So I’m in the hospital then?” I ask.

“Yes. Be glad you survived what you did,” she says as if me surviving is some sort of miracle.

“What all happened?” I ask. I can only remember the faintest things. Jake, drunk out of his mind, was falling over, me trying to take the wheel and then flying like I’ve never flown before, out of my seat.

“Well,” she says, “The car you were in collided with an SUV. You flew about twenty feet onto the road,” she pauses and sighs. “The three people who were in the car with you suffered major damages. One was drunk out of his mind. We found tons of alcohol in his body,” she pauses again.

I think for a moment to let this all process; I’m so woozy from whatever it is they put me on. That means he’s gone, he didn’t make it. I can’t tell if I’m crying or not but the look on her face tells me that I must be tearing up.

“I’m very sorry.”

“What about the other two?” I ask desperately. I hope Mike and Dylan are okay, especially Mike.

She looks at me longingly. I really wish my vision wasn’t so blurry, “They…uh…they didn’t make it either.”

I know for sure that I’m crying now. Not Mike and Dylan! They were so innocent, especially Mike! He was like a brother to me!

“I’ll…I’ll give you a few minutes.” She says as she walks out of the room.

I can’t believe this happened. I can’t even focus! Whatever they have me on is making me go insane. My eyes begin to close slowly and then I doze off in a wet, tear filled sleep.

Alicia, Alicia.  The name has been stuck in my mind ever since I shut my eyes—she’s all I can think about.  The only dreams I’ve had are replays of the accident and of Alicia.  There’s something about her that I just can’t get over.  Her face and the accident almost blend together.  Her voice is so angelic, the way she looks makes me feel like I’ve met her once before in another life…or another time and place.
