Chapter 3
When I awake, all the wires and tubes are detached from me, I still ache in places and feel bruised in others, but at least the tubes and wired are all gone! I’ve always hated those things from the day they were invented!
Yesterday was pretty much the same as the day before. After Alicia left, all I did was watch T.V. and then go to sleep again. The TV here isn’t too bad, but it’s not the greatest either. I spent most of my night deliriously watching the news, which was the first time I’ve ever seen myself on TV. Yep, I was on it. They showed the whole thing happen because apparently someone caught it on tape, I didn’t watch that part…it was too horrifying and brought back too many memories—just like an actual horror movie.
Now everyone knows about the accident and the other nurse, Leona, said that a lot of people were trying to come in and visit me but they can’t today because I have a schedule that I have to stick to. She didn’t tell me why or much about the schedule all she gave me was a piece of paper that said where I was supposed to be and when. It says this:
8 am-Breakfast-Cafeteria
9am-Room 110
2pm-Lunch-Cafeteria
1pm-Free time
4pm-Dinner-Cafeteria
5pm-Return to 206
And so on. Leona says that the doctors want me to get out and move around the hospital so I can get out for a while. The good news is that Alicia will be with me in the process, “Ready for breakfast?” she asks.
“I don’t know, am I, nurse?” I wink at her.
“As soon as you get out of bed and into this,” she rolls over a wheelchair.
For a second I think, why can’t I just walk? But then I remember that my leg is broken.
I sit up and adjust myself so that I can slide off of the bed and into the wheelchair.
Never in my life have I sat in a wheelchair and I never thought I would. This feels kind of weird especially considering that the back of this hospital outfit doesn’t cover my back side…oh awkward.
“Do you want me to push you” she asks, “or do you want to roll yourself?”
“I would like some assistance.” I laugh, “I feel like an old person in this thing.”
We’re in the hallway now and it really feels good to have gotten out of that stupid room! Alicia looks both ways down the long hall and then grabs a hold of the handles behind me, “Hold on tight,” she says, “I’ve always wanted to do this.”
I just stare down the hallway wondering what she meant by that, then I feel a sudden push and I’m flying down the hallway practically speeding! The air against my face as I’m rushing down the hallway in the wheelchair feels amazing! I haven’t been exposed to so much air in so long. I feel her running behind me.
We reach the end of the hall and she stops the chair.
I feel super dizzy for a second and my veins are pumped with adrenaline. She takes some time to catch her breath and I laugh, “That….was super fun.”
She laughs too and nods in agreement, still exhausted, “Bet it got you awake and ready for today.”
When we arrive to the cafeteria, it’s eight o’clock on-the-dot. The cafeteria is a lot bigger and nicer looking than I thought it would be. I notice that there are a lot of patients in here like me—lost, confused, and on some drug the hospital subscribed them to. I can they’re patients by the ugly gowns they wear.
