The crystal water gently lapped against the hull of the boat. Wind whispered through the sail, rocking me softly so that it was a struggle to keep my eyes open. I hadn't caught many fish that day. I hadn't caught many fish at all recently and my funds were starting to run low.
Finally, I felt a tug on the line. I reeled it in and was rewarded with... a skimpy little fish that looked like it was probably starving to death.
I sighed, unhooked the fish, and plunked it into the worryingly low pile of equally small fish in my cooler.
I crawled into the small room on my boat and onto the old mattress I slept on. I flung my arm over my eyes to try and block out the sun glaring in through the windows. I tried to sleep, but I couldn't. I opened up the small box of snacks and pulled out a few pieces of dried seaweed. I had been hoping they would last longer, but it didn't surprise me that they didn't.
I crawled back out of the room. I trimmed the sail a bit and started steering north. I wiped the sweat off of my neck, not that it made much of a difference. I just started sweating again. I grabbed a cup and scooped some water out of the ocean, then poured that into my small, portable desalination chamber. That thing was probably the only reason I wasn't dead yet.
I continued steering as the sun dropped lower and lower into the sky, and then I climbed back into my room. That time,I was able to fall asleep.
