Sorry that this is a late response but I think other kids inflated his ego. We all saw that his mom makes sure to deal with his behavior and make him work for what he gets (though he's still a bit spoilt). After seeing how he was acting, his mom probably put him in his place and did a major blow to his confidence. Once someone is up that high, you don't come back from it really easily.
He actually cares though. We see that after his fight with Deku. He told him to try his best because he didn't want the holder of One for All to lose.
