Down to "Earth"

The princess (she does have an actual name, doesn't she? Sylvia or something?) stood baffled for a while before running after me out of the palace. A few minutes' sitting down to let her catch up later, I pieced together from her that this capital city was called "Morgenheim", and home to something like five-hundred-thousand people. The city was built atop a river delta similar to New York - it even had a central island which was apparently also the aristocratic "cloud district". Central to that was the "royal spire", a giant fuckoff tower/palace more than two-hundred meters tall, which was visible from pretty much anywhere. This place was also stocked with a sewer system, an aqueduct, a giant stadium, a big-ass market square with an imposing central statue, the whole nine yards. The whole place would have been impressive even if that market square wasn't full of stuff like giant lizard-horses. They didn't even appear to be running a catgirl slave trade or anything, which eased my fears of being falsely accused by that princess, but was also kind of a letdown because then I could've gone looking for the FLDSMDFR as well.

"And, offworlder, allow me to apologize for not lending you my understanding of the manners of Welemor's court. You lack the knowledge, but I should not have allowed my pride to make fools of us both."

Not actually just chewing me out? Thanks for that princess, maybe someday I'll make up for that favor by actually learning your name.

In any case, what really mattered was that the city surrounding that aforementioned "big-ass market square" was littered with workshops of every kind imaginable. After my little stunt at the palace (which is the "royal spire", by the way), I figured that I'd need to prove my point, and I could think of no better way to do that than by manufacturing a functional gun. I strode into the first sufficiently advanced-looking blacksmith's shop I could find, and was halfway through asking for a commission through the princess when I realized I didn't have any money.

This time, the princess seemingly tuned-out the blacksmith's response and spoke to me directly.

"My mother was just about to tell you. You are under the patronage of Welemor - and all the nine realms. Any purchase you need to make within her majesty's dominion will be covered by the crown."

Oh, yeah - this isn't actually just an RPG. Well that's awfully handy, but now I feel kind of bad for ditching her mid-monologue. I should probably actually apologize at some point; I don't need anyone that powerful hating me.

Wait, why are you all kneeling down all of a sudden?

Oh shit, speak of the devil.

I winced as I turned around to face "her majesty" again. She had just stepped inside, leaving her entourage peering in from behind the doorway. Her own speech was elegant as it was incomprehensible, and the princess translated sentence-by-sentence.

"I apologize for making such a rash judgement against an absolute stranger like you. You have acted outside of accordance with Welemor's - with my - customs; under normal circumstances you would have been banned from the court, but I realize now that you have no knowledge of what you've violated. Know that myself and my subjects will aid you in any way you need; we have placed a great burden on you - it would be cowardice to leave you to carry out your quest alone. To that end, it is my pleasure to grant you my patronage. With my own heir-apparent to act as your voice for this world, you may claim whatever you may need to see this quest that is now yours fulfilled."

Oh, thank fuck, she's the one apologizing, for a moment there I thought I was about to be banished or something. You know what, if she thinks I just have no idea how you're meant to act around royalty (or actually, what I pulled is pretty rude to do to anyone), I'm not going to correct her.

I actually felt the need to bow a little bit as she finished her speech, and I replied in the most formal tone I could manage (for whatever that's even worth in this case).

"Thank you for your understanding, your highness. I will do all I can to be the hero you and your subjects need."

With that remark she turned and left, her entourage trailing behind her.

Well, where were we? Right, I was going to try to get these fine people to build me a gun. Well, back to work I guess.

"Yes, I'm here for a weapon, but not anything you've built before. I'd like to have a gun; they were our go-to weapon back home. We don't use bows - or even swords - anymore because guns are just so much more effective."

As she translated that for the blacksmith, she gave off a blatantly clear expression of confusion at what I was telling her. Well, that's better than disgust and secondhand embarrassment, I guess.

"That sounds wonderful, Mr. Offworlder, but I can't exactly build it if I don't even know what it is."

"I was about to get to that - you know, it's easier to explain if I have something to show you. Do you have some paper I can write on or something?"
