Chapter 3

I feel slightly drowsy as I wake, but that happens occasionally. I step out of the pod, excited for my day off school. As I'm not at school, I don't have to wear my uniform so I put on my weekend clothes which consists of a black pencil skirt, a white blouse and a choice of two tops: my blue jumper or grey cardigan. I choose the blue jumper to complete my outfit.

I wander downstairs for my Nutri-shake and see mother, father and Matthew waiting. "Are you excited Violet? I can't believe you get to miss a whole day of school! It's so unfair!"
"Matthew, everything here is always fair, you know that. She is only missing school due to a career opportunity. Now apologise to your sister."
"I'm sorry Violet, I hope you get the career you're hoping for."
"Thanks, I want to be in the CGRT or be a nutrient advisor."
"So you're in the nutrition department?"
"Yes, I was selected for that department due to my Biology results."
"Well done, I should get the HoverBus now, you coming?"
"Sure." I down the rest of my Nutri-shake. I could be helping make these. I could invent new flavours.

Matthew and I walk outside, waving bye to our parents and hop on the waiting HoverBus. I take the window seat and he moans in protest, "I thought it was my turn for the window seat!"
"Respect your elders, you little child!" I tease, ruffling up his curly hair.
"Oy, just because you're getting some snazzy job in the nutrient department..."
"What? I can't annoy my little brother anymore? Even though I'm technically superior to you."
"No you're not, just older!"
"Let's just accept that I am right, anyway it's your stop now, so I'll see you later alligator!"
"In a while crocodile!"

Matthew gets off the HoverBus just outside of his primary school. The train floats onwards throughout the city. I watch as rays of sunlight traipse through the window, scattering light inside and casting shadows too. I've always found nature beautiful, it's unappreciated, the hidden gems of the environment like flowers and hills and greenery and butterflies. I smile to myself at the image of blue butterflies batting their wings, flying innocently over the rolling hills of luscious green carpet.

The HoverBus stops at it's final destination: the Job Centre in the town centre. I snap out of my daydreams and pick up my bag before getting off of the HoverBus.

The streets are bare with few people to decorate the pavement. Adults are busy at work; children at school. I am of course an exception. It feels bizarre and rebellious to be lurking the streets with nobody here to check up on me. An odd sense of freedom swills in my gut, and I grin at the responsibility.

I walk quickly into the Job Centre where several Bots rush around, sending messages and completing tasks. I head over to the desk where a Bot welcomes me with a transmission on it's screen.

Welcome visitor!
We are delighted to have you here! Please enter your details on the screen, we hope you enjoy you're visit!

A survey then pops up on the Bot's screen and I fill in my details.

Full name: Violet-Anne Lockfield
Date of birth: 7/2/54
Mother's name: Catherine Lockfield
Father's name: Rupert Lockfield
Human number: 84363570921
Address: 8 Rose-bay Avenue

Next it comes up with a retinal scan before welcoming me inside. The Bot ushers me to a room where a smart lady sits at her tidy desk. She looks picture-perfect with not a single hair out of place and it makes me feel scruffy in comparison. "Ah, hello Violet, I am Julia Hartson, it's a pleasure to meet you." She shakes my hand thoroughly. "And you," I smile weakly.
"We believe that your Biology skills would be perfect as a member of the CGRT. She flashes me her badge with CGRT printed neatly on it to show her work position. "May I show you around? We'll need to catch a HoverBus to the offices."
"Of course."

We walk out of the centre to the station where we just about manage to catch a leaving HoverBus. "So, Violet, what are your interests?"
"I enjoy sports and like nature, it's beautiful."
"Which sports?"
"We're only allowed one- I chose running."
"Oh that's nice." We spend the rest of the short journey in silence, lost in our own thoughts.

The CGRT Department is a massive building. Red brick stands tall, overpowering the tiny HoverBus station. Small windows are opaque to prevent prying eyes nosing in and large double doors stand proud, guarding their magnificent home from the public.

I stand still, daunted by the incredible offices in front of me. I have to make sure that my jaw hasn't dropped comically in awe. Catherine chuckles to herself, amused by my reaction. "Would you like to go inside?"
"I would love to!"

She leads me inside where we stand in a grand foyer. Doors are everywhere, along mazes of corridors and on the floor above and even the floor above that. Barely stopping to acknowledge the amazing sight, the lady guides me swiftly onwards into a massive conference room. She knocks sharply before entering.

A large wooden table in a smooth oval shape holds food. As in the chewable substance which was eradicated years ago in 2050- apart from grand celebrations such as Christmas, graduations or birthdays and so on. A tall chocolate cake oozing thick icing sits proudly on a white plate with small squirts of cream around the top of it. There's also a punnet of grapes- the purple and green juicy fruits which are sweet on your tongue. There's also a plate full of mini cookies and I can picture the gooey warmth of their texture, the chocolate chips melting in my mouth. Glasses of what must be champagne which is Forbidden apart from for seniors bubble and fizz in front of people's seats. I gaze, star-struck by the table crammed full of edible sweet treats. The last time I actually ate something was the seventh of February, my birthday. My mouth waters at the spectacular sight displayed in front of me.

"Please sit down Violet, it's such an honour to meet you!" An honour? I'm merely your average student who blends willingly into the shadows. "Thank you, it's lovely to meet you too."
"Please tuck in!"
"Wha-really? This is for me?"
"Of course, you're an exceptional student and we want to congratulate you on becoming part of our team."
"I-thank you!"

I reach carefully for a slice of the cake, desperate to taste it's chocolaty goodness on my tongue. I lift a forkful to my mouth, closing my eyes momentarily. The soft cake blends perfectly with the creamy topping which sticks to the roof of my mouth. I chew slowly, savouring the sacred moment. Once I'm finished, I don't get anymore food, I want to make that slice of cake more special, the taste still settling in my mouth.

"So, Violet, how do you feel about joining us as a member of the CGRT?"
I swallow before grinning wildly, "How could I turn you down now?" They laugh amongst themselves at my answer.

"You're continuously exemplary results mean that you would fit in wonderfully here."
"Thank you."
"You would obviously start from the bottom as a Level One Researcher."
"Of course, thank you."

They begin to show me around the building to the canteen, conference rooms and various offices. I am not let down by the grand sights shown to me, apparently I'd get my own office! This is just too good to be true!
