“Lea! Lea, look what I found the other day.”
She came with a large grin and tossed her iPod’s earphone in my ear. I was startled because the sound was too loud. But I didn’t say anything. Charlie only listened to her music like that. Loud.
“So? What do you think?”
I had let myself get carried away with the music.
“Really not bad.”
She chuckled and took back the earphone, simply happy because she had shared her discovery with me.
“What were you doing?”
“Before you stormed in like a madwoman? I was trying to progress a little bit with my homework.”
“Good idea… Especially since this weekend, you won’t have the time.”
I frowned my eyebrows.
“And why?”
Her eyes lit up, she was too pleased with what she was going to announce to me.
“I’m taking you to have fun! There’s Audrey who’s organizing this mega party, she’s moving out and her parents left her the empty house one last time so that she can party. Her house is very big, there’s going to be so much people.”
“Nice.”
“Are you joking? It’s gonna be the party of the century.”
“I don’t doubt it.”
And that’s how I found myself with a cup of alcohol in my hand and a cigarette in the other while Charlie was dancing like she was crazy on the dance floor. She’d just seen herself getting offered six cups. I was thinking about those poor guys who didn’t have a chance, Charlie didn’t have eyes for anyone; she loved her freedom too much for that. Her heels clicked on the floor and I giggled. We were both laughing, we were drunk. At first I didn’t want to drink, and then finally I let myself get carried away with her craziness. I took a cup, then two. The music was ear-splitting and Charlie continued to rock to its rhythm. We knew we were lost tonight but we didn’t care, we were two in the middle of all the others and we had this idiot smile painted on our lips. We also knew perfectly that it was immature and stupid to think like that but we had to give ourselves a reason to our profligacy tonight: we wanted to feel alive. For once.
“Hey, is it your friend on the floor?”
I turned around towards the crystalline voice. He was as beautiful as a god. Messy hair, sparkling eyes, jester and devastating smile. All that with a natural that commanded attention. My heart failed to beat. I tried to expel the dizziness of the alcohol, without much success.
“Yes, but you’re wasting your time.”
He laughed.
“Who says I’m here for her?”
I didn’t say anything back.
“You know cigarettes aren’t very good for your health.”
I glanced at the burning, glowing tip. Yes, I knew. But on the other side what I couldn’t remember was how it got to my hand, that damn cigarette; I hated it. I threw it in an ashtray like it had burned my hands. He smiled, pleased, and continued:
“Can I offer you a drink?”
I gestured to my already-filled cup before he nodded.
“Another time then. That’s not the most important at the moment.”
And before I could even move, he threw himself onto me. His sweet lips captured mine without any effort. After a moment of surprise, I closed my eyes. He was a perfect stranger; I could’ve shove him away, but dear god! He was far from being unpleasant and we were here to enjoy ourselves. I felt the heat of his hand on my thigh, of his other one tangled in my hair. So that he could bring my head closer, like he really desired me. The noise of the party suddenly appeared far-off, my head was all of a sudden clear again, it was better than a cold shower. How could a simple stranger give me so many sensations?
He suddenly pulled off.
“This is when I receive a slap isn’t it?”
I couldn’t respond to his playful smile and instead, asked him another question of my own.
“You’re always this… indecent?”
“Who isn’t between young people?”
“Am I attractive to the point that you threw yourself onto me?”
* She smiled at him for the first time. And not an idiot smile like the one she had plastered on her face a few minutes ago because of the alcohol.
He was left breathless. It was a magnificent smile. And at that moment, he wanted to say that, yes, she was terribly attractive… But he settled with a mere “Tsss” whilst shaking his head. *
