"Miss Diana, how do you see yourself dying?" Zero's voice boomed. I knew the answer right away, not hesitating to think about it.
"By you, or someone here." I said with venom in my voice. Zero chuckled at my answer, and I gave him a confused look. "What? Thats how I see it. I'll never see the light of day, considering where I am right now."
"If you succseed, Diana, you will make it to see the light of day. Your accusations are correct. You couldd die here and never see the light of day. You could be like that lonely girl you saw earlier."
I stared in awe. How the heck did he know I saw that?
"Was that just for intimidation? A trick?" I could see Jaden give a sly smile out of the corner of my eye. Zero gave me a wide grin. "What?" I grew impatient.
"Perfect." Zero mumbled. "Yes, it was a trick. Jaden over here even put it together himself." I looked over at Jaden who smiled.
"Part of the job." was all he said.
"Fuck you guys." I mumbled. They had scared me like crazy.
"Back to the question." Zero discreetly forced me to answer.
I thought about it for minute. How did I see myself dying other than here? There was always the option of suicide, or drowning, but you'd have to have a body for proof. I tried to think of a way to die without needing body proof. Then, it clicked.
"Fire or acid." I spoke after a minute or two.Zero nodded and mumbled something to himself. Jaden had a look of familiarity on his face.
"She was kidnapped and the house burned down. She was burned along with her captor." Jaden said.
"Farmiliar, isn't it?" Zero said slowly, as if he were waiting to see Jaden's reaction. All Jaden did was lean forward in his chair, placing his head in his hands. "Anyways, do you agree with this, Miss Diana?"
"I do." I said without hesitation. It was almost like getting married to death, letting it take control of your life. Now that I thought about it, I had no control over my life. I was just a pawn within a large chess game. I had no other choice but to go with the flow.
"Now that's settled, we have another matter at hand." I gulped involuntarily and a bit loudly, causing Zero to laugh. "We won't kill you," he paused. "yet." Zero smiled, his false white teeth shining under the light. "You must make a pledge."
Oh damn.
"What kind?" I forced the question out of my mouth, interrupting Zero. Was it a written one? Physical one? Spoken one?
"A tattoo." So it was physical. "Jaden, why don't you show Diana your tattoo." Jaden nodded and obeyed his orders. He turned to face the kitchen, leaving me to stare at his back. "On the neck." Zero spat. My eyes made its way up to his neck to see what he meant. An infinity sign was tattooed in black onto his neck. The two lines intersected at the middle, but the ends didn't touch.
"What if I said no?" My mother had always told me to never smoke, drink too much, and get a tattoo. They would look ugly on wrinkly skin.
"Consequences, my dear." Zero said it in a manner that told me he knew what I was thinking.
"And if I don't accept your gracious offer?" My voice was dripping with sarcasm, but Zero didn't seem to care.
"So you would put an end to your life?" he gave me a knowing look. "If you accept my offer, you would become one of us. Jaden enjoys it." Jaden nodded, seeming out of it.
"Then I will not accept your kind offer." I said bitterly.
"Miss Diana, its this really what you want?" Zero's voice was amused, happy even.
"Yes." I said, more to myself than anyone.
"Very well. Max?" Max came out of the corner of the room and made his way over to me. He held a huge white butchers knife that was stained with blood. I hadn't noticed him before, which was odd.
"Max will have the honor. Are you still sure, Miss Diana?" A fake look of concern crossed his face. I scoffed at his effort.
"Yes." I said with confidence. I knew that this was better than risking my life every day.
Zero nodded, Jaden, who had turned back to face Zero, closed his eyes and mumbled something over and over again. Max put the cool blade on my skin and slowly started to push. I could feel the remains of dried up blood that stained the knife, stuck to it like humans clung to their last breath. The knife had barely made it a centimeter into my neck when I couldn't take it anymore.
"STOP!" I screamed. Max immediately removed the knife from my neck, the blood slowly dripping down my back and onto the chair, staining it. Zero chuckled and Jaden sighed in relief.
"Death isn't what everybody wants." Zero said, looking at the blood trickling down my neck. "But others will succumb to it with open arms." Zero paused and drank from a coke that sat next to a huge pile of papers. "To the tattoo room." he said, discreetly forcing me to leave. Jaden stood quickly and walked out with Max, with me trailing on their heels. Before I could leave, Zero grabbed my arm and pulled me close, whispering in my ear,
"I would watch yourself, Diana, because you never know what lurks in these halls." Zero let me run after Jaden and Max, his voice still echoing and repeating itself in my head.
