I walked into the kitchen to get some breakfast as I waited for Dean to get out of the shower. Iris was there fixing Hadley a bowl of cereal as he waited in his seat at the breakfast bar. "Good morning," Iris greeted me.
"Morning."
"Did you sleep well?" she asked as she sat Hadley's bowl of cereal in front of him.
I shrugged. "Not really," I answered honestly.
"Then you can go back to bed if you'd like," she suggested. "There aren't any meetings until tomorrow and we don't have plans today."
I shook my head at the idea and grabbed a homemade muffin off the counter, that was in the midst of cooling. "I can't waste the day by sleeping through most of it...Thank you for letting me stay here."
The mother smiled. "You are welcome here as long as you want to stay."
Appreciating that, I bobbed my head. "Do you know what Roman will be doing today?"
She shook her head and started putting away the milk and cereal. "We told him that he and the others could spend the day exploring the town if they wanted," she said. "Why?"
"I just need to talk to him."
Her grey eyes stared into mine as her blonde brows furrowed. "Is something wrong?"
I quickly shook my head. "No, I'd just like some alone time with my uncle."
I knew she understood by the bob of her head. "If I were you, I'd go now to catch him before he heads into town."
I took a bite of my muffin and chewed it. "Yeah, that's probably for the best. I'm going to go change." Quickly finishing my muffin on the way to Dean's room, I walked in and found the bathroom door closed and the sound of running water coming from the bathroom. Dean had gotten in the shower.
I quickly changed my clothes and left, passing Iris in the kitchen. "Will you please tell Dean where I went?"
Iris slipped me a small smile and nodded. "Of course."
"Thanks. Tell him I'll find him later. Bye."
I pretty much jogged all the way to the visitor's house since it was just a few houses down but was still feeling a little short of breath by the time I made it. Opening the door, I walked in and found Roman there near the door, slipping on his shoes, seeming as he was about to leave. Landon and Bella were nowhere in sight. "Hey, where have you been?" my uncle asked me, a smile on his face. "We figured that you would be staying here with us."
I shuffled my weight on my feet, suddenly feeling a little anxious. "I stayed at the Martin's last night," I informed him.
He nodded once, his smile slightly dimming. "Oh."
"Can we talk for a minute?" I asked him since I figured there was somewhere he was soon headed.
He nodded again and straightened his posture before crossing his arms and leaning against the wall. "Of course, what's up?"
I took a deep breath. "Did you know about me being stolen from my parents as a baby?" I asked him, surprisingly able to keep my voice clear.
With a small sigh and hesitation, Roman nodded. "Yeah, I did."
I felt my heart drop in my chest and took a deep breath, trying to ease the weight that was forming. "Wow," was all I could muster in return.
"I'm sorry."
"Why didn't you tell me?"
He shrugged, keeping calm. "It wasn't my place to tell."
I furrowed my eyebrows and narrowed my gaze. "What do you mean it wasn't your place to tell?" I asked, raising my voice. "Who else was going to tell me?" I shook my head in disbelief. "It was your place to tell."
After that, he couldn't meet my gaze and his line of sight lowered to the floor. "Melody, I wanted you to find out by Xavier deciding to tell you."
"They would've never told me if it wasn't for me getting sentenced to execution!" I found myself yelling now. "Do you know how much it would have helped me to know that they weren't my real parents when I figured out that they are murderers? I was constantly questioning myself on whether I would end up turning into a monster like them!" I held back the forming tears, trying to take deep breaths. "You should have told me."
Roman finally looked up at me. "Put yourself in my shoes. With everything going on and knowing that kind of information, what would you have done?"
"I would have told me because it would have made everything in these past few weeks easier."
His eyes hardened in the slightest. "But would it really?" he asked me. "How did you react when you found out?"
"I freaked out as any normal person would."
He nodded as if I had proved his point. "Exactly. I knew you would've found out eventually and I knew it would come out when the time was right."
I shook my head, feeling anger toward Roman for the first time in my life. "I don't agree with you."
He shrugged as if it didn't bother him. "You don't have to," he stated. "Because it was my decision."
Gritting my teeth, I knew if I stood there in front of him any longer, I wouldn't get myself any closer to hearing him say that he regretted his decision. Because he didn't and I could tell. With a shake of my head, I spun on my heels and left without speaking another word to him.
