It all started when Steve McGarrett met Catherine Rollins. Both in the Navy and both madly in love with each other. Austin was a surprise to them. They were only on and off dating at the time when Catherine got pregnant, but this led them to become more serious. One would stay back to watch Austin while the other was on tour. Three years later they had Kelsey and continued with their same system, still not married or even engaged. When Catherine got pregnant again they knew they couldn't continue to do this with three children, but had difficulty coming up with a solution. She gave birth to their youngest Carson a year after Kelsey was born and as they struggled to figure out a plan, they were presented with the passing of Steve's father. They flew down to the island for his memorial and while there Steve was offered a job by the Mayor to run his own task force. He accepted the job believing that this was all meant to happen. They had been struggling with the children and had now had a home on the island, a job, and Steve's sister Mary, who also lived on the island, offered to help care for the children. The only challenge being that Catherine took a months leave and was soon going to have to return to her position across seas. At this point Austin was 4, Kelsey was just over a year, and Carson was only 5months old. When Catherine left Steve continued to get help from his sister and also from his new partner Danny's ex wife Rachel, who had a daughter around the same age as his children. Catherine visited a few times over those next three years when she had leave but ultimately didn't see much of the children. After those long three years Catherine decided to take a long leave of absence as she worked alongside Five-0. She had finally developed the kind of relationships a mother should have with her children. After 4 years of leave she was called back for a "secret mission," so she told the kids. The operation was classified though so even Steve didn't know why she was leaving. This time she left it was harder on everyone. She had finally developed a relationship with the children and her relationship with Steve was thriving. Steve had actually planned on proposing to her until she mentioned leaving again. He begged her to stay but she said she couldn't, her country depended on her. She also told him that he shouldn't wait up for her. She wasn't going to have any outside contact and she didn't know how long she would be gone for. She was tired of letting him down and letting the children down. This was hard for Steve to hear but he somewhat agreed with everything she was saying. They needed a sense of normalcy and her coming and going was only hurting the children. When Catherine left Austin was 11, Kelsey was 8, and Carson was 7. Steve continued to receive help with the kids from Rachel but Mary had moved away and adopted her own child, so she was unavailable. Austin learned to grow up fast and helped a lot around the house and with his younger siblings. The kids all developed nicknames as they matured. Austin became Aj, Kelsey became Kels, and Carson became Cars.
It's now six years later where Aj is 17 and a senior in high school, Kelsey is 14 and a freshman, and Carson is 13 in 8th grade. They haven't seen or heard from Catherine, except for a couple phone calls, since she left years ago. It's been a rough road so far but the kids have all become closer because of it and they're very content with their small family. Maybe too content sometimes. For a short while a new Five-0 recruit by the name of Junior Reigns was staying with them. He was fresh out of the seals when he came looking for Steve, wanting a job with Five-0. The kids didn't have a huge problem with Junior but he was staying in Kelsey's room while he was there. Kelsey stayed in Carson's room because he had a small futon. This was causing problems between the kids, not having their own space, but luckily for them Steve helped Junior find an apartment and he was out only a week after.
Today was a Wednesday like any other. Steve was up early to get to work, and the kids were up getting ready for school. Aj drove them all to school in his 2005 mustang that his father bought from Danny before he bought his Camaro. He had to drop Carson off at his school before arriving to the high school. When they arrived to school Aj dropped Kelsey off in the front so he could "go look for parking," when really he was texting his friends Alex and Ben where he was. They had been planning on ditching school that day for almost a week because it was Alex's birthday so they wanted to celebrate. Aj found a parking spot and his friends found him. "Yo!" Alex shouted as he opened the car door startling Aj. "What's up!" Aj said extending a fist bump to Alex. Alex pulled the seat forward and climbed in the back. "Hey!" Ben said as he pushed the seat back and sat in front. "So where are we going?" Aj asked. "I say we hit the north shore beach and then grab some food." Alex said from the backseat. "Sounds good to me." Ben said. "Aight, cool!" Aj said as he began to leave the parking lot. They had spent a few hours at the beach sharing the skimboard Aj had in his trunk when they became hungry. There was a sub shop just down the street that they liked, so they packed up their stuff and drove down there. They all ordered their meals and went to sit at the tables out front of the shop. They ate their sandwiches but continued to sit there and talk until Aj noticed a familiar car. "Shit." Aj said as he lowered his head trying to hide. "What?" Ben asked. Aj quickly looked up and gestured toward the car that just pulled up, "that's my grandpa's car." Why do they have your grandpa's car?" Alex asked as Junior and Tani exited the vehicle. "My dad is letting Junior drive it until he can get a car." Aj answered as he quickly glanced up again. Alex and Ben continued to watch Junior and Tani walk into the shop as Aj kept his head down. "I don't think they noticed you dude." Alex said. "Yeah your good bro." Ben said as he sipped his soda.
"Hey Junes, did the kids out front seem suspicious to you?" Tani asked as they waited in line. "I didn't really get a good look at them." He answered. Tani was silent as she glanced back and then thought to herself. "Why?" Junior asked. "I think the boss's son is out there?" She answered. "Steve's son?" He asked glancing back. Tani quickly tugged on his shoulder, "Well don't look." "Are you sure it's him? It's only 1:30pm, he should be in school still." Junior stated. "Well I'm not positive but he looked a lot like him, and did you notice how he was kind of hiding his face while we walked up?" Tani answered. "Let's just worry about questioning our guy first and when we leave we can check him out." Junior suggested. They continued to question the cashier because they needed to confirm an alibi for a suspect they had in a murder case. After confirming their alibi they ordered a couple sandwiches and approached the boys outside. "Hey boys." Tani smiled. "Hey." Alex muttered. "Shouldn't you boys be in school?" Tani asked. "It was a short day today." Ben stated. "That's funny because as cops we get the local school schedules and I don't remember any school having an early day today. Do you Tani?" Junior sarcastically asked. "No I don't Junes. Do you Aj?" Tani asked as she placed a hand on the boy's shoulder. Aj slowly looked up at her, "It mustn't have been put on the calendar." "Right, well I think you boys should come with us because I'm fairly certain your parents don't know about this short day." Tani gestured for the car. The boys all shamefully stood. Tani held her hand out to Aj, "I'll take your car." He blankly looked at her before reaching into his pocket and giving her his keys. "I'm going to take your friends home and meet you guys at the palace." Tani explained. "Sounds good, lets go." Junior said as he directed Aj to the car. The other boys directed Tani to Aj's car, and she took them home.
"So why did you guys ditch school?" Junior asked as they drove to the palace. "It's Alex's birthday so we went to the beach to celebrate I guess." Aj muttered. "That's why there are weekends." Junior stated. "Where's the fun in that?" Aj chuckled. Junior just shook his head and laughed. They arrived to the palace and Steve was surprised and confused as to why Aj was with Junior. "Junior what's going on?" Steve asked as both Junior and Aj approached the team. "Tani and I went to check on that alibi, which is solid by the way, and found Aj and a couple friends hanging out at the sub shop." Junior explained. "Aren't you supposed to be in school?" Steve glared over at Aj. "I was supposed to be." Aj answered. Starting to become annoyed Steve asked, "Then why were you at a sub shop?" "It was Alex's birthday and we wanted to go do something fun, so we spent the morning at the beach and then we went there for lunch." Aj explained. "Tani has his car and is taking the other two boys home before coming back here." Junior added. "Let me guess, Ben was with you guys too?" Steve asked. Aj just nodded. Steve shook his head and sighed. "Okay, hand me your phone." Steve said as he held out his hand. "What? Why?!" Aj questioned. "Hand me your phone and get your ass in my office." Steve demanded as he really became irritated. Embarrassed as ever, Aj handed his phone over and went into his office. Steve put Aj's phone into his pocket, "Thanks for bringing him to me Junior." "Welcome Boss." "Now let's continue this case." Steve said motioning towards the monitors.
Tani eventually made it back to the palace and turned Aj's keys over to Steve. Steve made sure his other two children had rides home and then the team continued to work on the case. They later finished it and Steve went to wake a sleeping Aj before heading home. As they pulled into the driveway, "Incase it wasn't clear earlier you're grounded." Aj groaned, "Are you kidding? For how long?" "Three days, and you won't get your phone back til then either." Steve answered as he opened his car door. Aj exited the car as well, "talk about over reacting." Steve followed Aj into the house, "This isn't the first time you've skipped school incase you've forgotten." "Whatever." Aj mumbled as they entered the house. "Hey dad!" Kelsey shouted from the dining room table where she was sat doing homework. "Hey Kels." He greeted as he set his gun and badge down on the small table by the door. "Hey Cars! Your homework done?" Steve asked as he glanced over to the couch where Carson was watching Nickelodeon. Carson didn't answer, so Steve stopped to turn and look at him, "So that's a no. Turn off the tv and get it done." Carson did what he was told and sat at the dining table along with Kelsey to do his homework. "Are you guys hungry?" Steve asked returning from the kitchen. "No I made us Mac N Cheese earlier." Kelsey answered as she continued to do her homework. Steve took a seat at the table, "Okay, I'll just make something for myself then." There was a long pause. "So do you guys remember that crazy date I went on a couple weeks ago?" "The one where you guys found the plane and you were getting shot at?" Carson asked. Steve chuckled, "yes that one." "What about it?" Kelsey asked. "Well I've been on a few dates with this girl now and I'd like to invite her over tomorrow night to have dinner with us and meet you guys. What do you think?" Steve questioned. "I think that'd be great!" Kelsey said. Carson remained quiet. "What about you Cars?" Steve asked. Carson looked up from his homework, "Why does she have to come here for dinner? Can't you two go out to dinner by yourselves?" "Well I really like this girl but before I can even consider moving forward with her, I want to make sure you guys like her too!" Steve explained. "Fine." Carson groaned. "Great! I'll go let Aj know our plans, finish your homework it's getting late." Steve said as he stood from the table. Steve went up to Aj's room and knocked on his door. There was no answer. He opened the door and was surprised to see Aj already asleep considering he slept in his office for hours. Anyway, he was asleep so he shut the door and decided he'd let Aj know of the plans in the morning. The kids downstairs finished their homework and got to bed by 10. Steve made himself food and waited for them to get to bed before he went to sleep himself. The homework was done, the kids were in bed, and Steve was exhausted. He loved his kids, more than anyone could imagine, but being a single dad to three teenagers can really take a toll on a person.

I'm sure by now you are already questioning how Steve's kids could be so challenging. I mean Kelsey sounds like the perfect child, Carson is completely innocent, and sure Aj skipped school but what normal kid doesn't at some point. Well if this is what you're thinking, then you have no idea what is to come. Let's just say there's a lot more to these kids than you think. A lot more to the family in general.
Hope you enjoyed that first chapter! Hoping to get the next chapter out within a few days but we'll see how that goes! Happy reading:)
