He Has Your Back pt.2

It was now Tuesday. Aj had debated trying to convince Steve to let him stay home and rest but he knew that probably wouldn't happen. Plus he had to drive all the other kids to school as well. School was long. His pain meds wore off after half the day so he was trying his best to remain comfortable and deal with the pain. Luckily Steve wrote him a note excusing him from P.E. for the rest of the week. After school Aj, Kelsey, and Grace picked up Carson and then all headed to the palace. Aj was still grounded so everyday after school they were going to the palace to do homework because Steve didn't trust him to stay home. Danno had Grace for the day again so he asked Aj to bring her as well. They were all sitting at a table talking and doing hw while Five-0 was working a case. The team was discussing something around the monitors when they all of a sudden got a call from an officer downstairs, telling them that the palace was being attacked. Seconds later they also heard a couple gunshots. "Kids! Hide in my office! Aj there's a gun in my top desk drawer! Use it to protect yourselves! But only if you have to!" Steve shouted as held his gun out. "Okay!" Aj said as he followed Kelsey and Carson into the office. "Grace! Stay with Aj!" Danno shouted as he followed the rest of the team out of the office. "Be safe Danno!" She said as she followed Aj and Kelsey into Steve's office. Grace, Carson, and Kelsey tried to squeeze together under Steve's desk best they could while Aj just hid behind it. "Hey! I know you guys are scared but whatever happens I need you guys to stay as quiet and still as you can. Cover your mouth if you have to." Aj whispered. "What about you?" Kelsey asked. "Well my hope is that no one comes up here but if they do, then my priority is keeping you guys safe." Aj whispered. "But what will you do?" Kelsey asked. "Why do you think dad gave me his gun? To use it! If I have to then I want you guys to cover your ears and duck your heads. If you guys scream from the noise then they could find you. So just stay quiet!" Aj Finished as he peeked over the desk and the floor was still clear. The team left to investigate what was going on and shortly came under fire. They started taking out shooters one by one but had no idea who these people were and what they wanted. Then they remembered that had just taken a mob boss into custody. Steve and Danny rushed down to the holding block and took him into their protective custody. They could only assume these people were here to kill him or set him free.
     Meanwhile, the kids were all still hiding in Steve's office when a couple men entered the floor and began sweeping the room. Aj saw them and instructed the others to cover their mouths and remain quiet. The men cleared every office but Steve's, his was last. Aj took a deep breath and prepared himself for what he was about to do. Aj heard one of the men come in. When he heard him get closer to the desk Aj quickly popped up, hit the gun out of the man's hand and began to engage in hand to hand combat. Aj took a couple hits to the ribs but it wasn't enough to take him down. He tussled with the man for a few minutes before grabbing hold of his head and slamming it against the wall. Making the man fall to the floor unconscious. For a brief second, Aj forgot there was a second man in the room and quickly picked up Steve's gun. He left the office and while he scanned the floor he was jumped. The other man kicked his arm and he dropped the gun causing a miss fire, which everyone in the building heard. Aj turned around to fight just as the man threw a mean right cross to Aj's face. Aj stumbled back and that's when the man took out his gun and shot Aj in the shoulder, causing him to fall back onto the ground. Aj tried applying pressure to his shoulder as he groaned in pain. The man approached Aj and knelt beside him, "Ah did someone shoot you." "Fuck you." Aj grunted. "You're not Five-0. So who are you?" The man asked. Aj didn't answer and gave the man a death stare. The man reached into Aj's pocket where he pulled out his wallet and then his ID. "Ah, McGarrett. You must be the commander's son. Figures. Only a McGarrett would know how to defend themselves like that at . . . 16?17? How old are you kid?" The man asked. "Go to hell." Aj muttered again. The man chuckled, "You'll be some nice leverage over McGarrett. Maybe now he'll give me what I want." Aj spit in the man's face, "you're not getting anything." The man wiped the spit off his face before hitting Aj in the head with the back of his gun, knocking him unconscious. "Should've kept your mouth shut kid." The man took Aj's phone out of his pocket and found Steve's contact labeled Dad.
Steve and Danny were still walking around with the Mob Boss, trying to make it as close to the ground floor as they could while keeping him safe. Then Steve's phone rang. "Turn that off." Danny worried. Steve looked at the caller ID, "It's Aj." "Well answered it then." Danny said. Steve did, "Hey, Are you guys okay?" "Ohhh he's just great." The man hissed. "Who is this? Where's Aj?" Steve asked. "Let's just say he can't come to the phone right now." He replied. Steve gave Danny a worried look, "What do you want?" "You know what I want. Bring him to the lobby in 5 minutes if you want to see your son alive." The man demanded as he hung up. "We need to get to the lobby." Steve stated as he grabbed a hold of the man's arm. "What's going on?" Danny asked. They began to walk towards the elevator, "They have Aj." Danny's mind instantly went to the worst, "What about Grace? Is Grace okay?" "I think so, but if we're not in the lobby in 5 minutes I don't think Aj will be." Steve said as he continued to drag along the mob boss.
     The man picked up Aj, threw him over his shoulder, and carried him to the lobby where he set him down in the middle of the floor. Still unconscious and bleeding from both his head and shoulder injuries. It was only  moments later when the elevator door opened, Steve and Danny standing behind it with the mob boss. Steve and Danny threw out their guns before exiting with their hands up. A few men pulled aside the mob boss while a couple others pushed Steve and Danny down onto their knees. That's when Steve noticed Aj, "What the hell? You said if I brought you your boss you'd leave my son alone?" The man looked down at Aj and smirked, "I said I wouldn't kill him. Your son did this to himself." "Look, we gave you what you wanted. Now let me get my son some help!" Steve pleaded. The man hesitated as he glanced down at Aj, "No. I think I'll use his leverage a little longer." Seconds later the palace was raided by Swat. Steve and Danny hit the ground as they took out all the men and took the mob boss back into custody. A couple Swat men untied Steve and Danny and Steve quickly rushed to Aj's side. He examined Aj's head and shoulder before yelling for someone to bring the paramedics in. Aj's eyes started to twitch as he began to come to. "Aj?" Steve asked as he placed his hand on his forehead. Aj groaned and fully opened his eyes. "Hey bud. You're okay. The paramedics are on their way." Steve said as he gestured for Aj to remain still. "Kelsey . . ." Aj muttered. "As far as we know they're okay. Danno will go check on them." Steve said as he gave Danno a nod. Aj closed his eyes again and winced as he held onto his ribs. "What happened bud?" Steve asked. Aj took a deep breath, "Someone came into your office. I took care of him but then the other guy jumped me." The paramedics finally came in and knelt beside Aj. Steve stood to get out of their way, "the paramedics are going to check you out." The paramedics placed a brace around his neck and cut off his shirt. They placed some gauze over his shoulder and head wound. "Anything else bothering you?" the paramedic asked. "My ribs." Aj muttered. The paramedics gave him an IV with morphine for the pain until they got to the hospital.  They were lifting him onto the gurney when the other kids ran down the stairs to be beside him. Kelsey grabbed a hold of his hand, "Are you okay?" "If you guys are okay, then I'm okay." he smiled. "Thank you Aj." Grace smiled. "Yeah. Thank you for keeping my monkey safe." Danno said as he pulled Grace in for a hug. "We need to take him now. He'll be going to Kings medical center." The paramedic said. "Okay. We'll meet you there." Steve said.

     The paramedics rolled him out of the palace and into the ambulance. Danny took Grace home for the day while Steve and the kids went to the hospital. They sat in the waiting room for about an hour until a nurse finally came out with some news. "How is he?" Steve asked. "He's going to be okay, but he's in rough shape. The bullet was wedged into his shoulder pretty good but we were able to get it out without any further problems. We stitched up his head and determined he has a mild concussion, and we also found he has 3 broken ribs." The nurse explained. Steve nodded as he took a second to think, "Okay. So where do we go from here?" "We're going to keep him for a couple days just to monitor his shoulder. We got the bullet out relatively soon but we just want to make sure there is no kind of infection." the nurse answered. "He plays baseball and football, will this affect that in any way?" Steve asked. The nurse nodded, "He will need some physical therapy for his shoulder but in time he will be back on the field."  "Okay. When can we see him?" Steve asked. "He's ready for visitors now. I can take you to his room." the nurse gestured. Steve and the kids followed the nurse to Aj's room. When they got in, he was sleeping with the blanket covering the bottom half of his body. His entire shoulder and upper body region was wrapped with bandages and gauze. He had stitches in his forehead and his ribs were even more bruised than before. Steve pulled up a chair and sat beside the bed while Carson stood beside him and Kelsey sat at the bottom by Aj's feet. They talked to him a little bit and then made themselves comfortable. About 20 minutes later a nurse came in to check on him. As she was doing so, "Why hasn't he woken up yet?" Carson asked. "The medicine we gave him made him a little tired. He should be waking up at any moment." She replied. She finished checking everything, "All looks good. Just click the blue button on that remote if he wakes up and you need me." "Okay. Thank you." Steve said as the nurse left the room, shutting the door behind her. Only 5 minutes after the nurse left, Aj's fingers started to moves and his eyes started to twitch. Steve took notice and sat up, "Aj?" Aj squeezed his eyes shut before opening them and looking around the room. He finally looked over at Steve and tried to sit up, only to wince and groan at the pain in his ribs. Steve placed his hand on Aj's forearm, "take it easy." Aj sighed as he laid his head back, "Is everyone okay?" Kelsey approached the side of the bed, "We're fine. Thanks to you." "Where's Carson?" Aj asked. Kelsey pointed to the couch under the window, "he fell asleep." "Hey. How are you feeling?" Steve asked. Aj took a deep breathe, "like everything hurts." "Want me to get the nurse?" Steve asked. "No, I'll be fine . . . Has anyone talked to Ella?" Aj asked. "I'll text her for you. What do you want me to say?" Kelsey asked as she took out her phone. "Just tell her I don't have my phone and that I'll call her as soon as I can." Aj replied. Kelsey did what he asked and put her phone away. "So how long do I have to stay here?" Aj asked. "The nurse said a couple days." Steve replied. Aj took a minute to respond, "is she hot?" Kelsey laughed while Steve rolled his eyes. Aj began to laugh as well before he groaned, "Ahh," and then placed an arm over his ribs. Steve immediately looked worried, "Your ribs?" "Yeah, I'm fine though. You guys should go home and get some sleep. Carson is tired and I'm not going anywhere." Aj suggested. "You sure?" Steve asked. Aj just nodded. "Okay but we'll be back in the morning with breakfast." Steve said as he stood. "Deal." Aj smiled. Kelsey asked Carson and they all gave Aj a hug goodbye. They got home around 8pm and all went their separate ways for the night.
It had been a long day. Even when they think life is going good, something always happens. As Danny would say, trouble really does follow the McGarrett family. Luckily they are like no other breed. McGarretts are the toughest people around and not just because they have to be.

Just alittle late ...haha... sorry about that guys. You really don't understand how difficult writing can be until you do it. This is only 1 of many stories I'm writing so it's easy to get stuck. I'm not sure when Steve will find out about the beach incident but it will definitely come up soon. I'm trying to write everyday so hopefully I can have another chapter up within a week, but as usual no promises. Thanks for all the love on this story and like always, I'd love to hear your guys suggestions so please comment:) in the upcoming chapters you guys will be getting to know Aj's girlfriend Ella a little better, a love interest for Kelsey, and possibly one for Steve.
