perla's pov (flashback) :
"how long have you been saving up this money nova?"
i watch her as she counts the money and then stuffs it into her wallet.
"the beginning of the year."
"you're serious?" i chuckle
she nods slowly and turns to me with a shy grin.
"you're too fucking nice, man." i fall back onto her bed and stare at the ceiling
"am not." she falls back onto the bed next to me
"you've been saving up money and working, just to get ethan shoes for christmas."
"ok they aren't just shoes perla. he's been wanting for a long time."
"ok. what does a long time mean in your definition."
"he started talking about them last year and he hasn't stopped."
i smirk at her and she waves her hands in my face.
"you're so in love nova."
she throws a pillow at me and i laugh throwing one back.
"how much are they anyway?"
"eight-hundred."
my eyes widen and i jump up from the bed.
"eight-hundred fucking dollars nova?"
she nods in response and i shake my head.
"you are insane. i swear, insane."
"oh c'mon! we've been best friends since childhood i have to get him something amazing."
"no you don't nova. small things count too you know."
"i know perla, but these mean so much to him."
"you've spent so much money on him."
"i don't care if i waste my whole bank account on him. literally all i want is for him to be happy."
"that's why you're not telling him?"

"how much more money?" grayson asks
"... for what."
he looks at me like i'm dumb and mouths, "the shoes."
"i'm a hundred away."
"you've worked this whole year for seven-hundred?"
"mhm. you know i've been thinking, should i get him something else? watch alison get the same thing for him-"
"no you're not changing anything. i swear nova you've worked on this since january.
i sigh and plop onto the couch.
"i don't know how to earn the other money." i play with my jacket zipper
"i'll find something for you."
"no, no. i can find something it's ok."
