Peter nods his head when he's spoken to, laughs even though the jokes aren't funny, and introduces himself to people he'd never wish to meet. His entire life is a script written out for him and nothing seems to ever happen out of the ordinary until tonight.
As his father discusses business with a diplomat, Peter by his side, his mind cannot help but drift towards the small letter, burning inside his jacket's pocket. He tries to search the crowd for the mysterious woman and yet he couldn't find her anywhere. His mind continues to develop her face, those glorious chestnut eyes, and those full lips that uttered a heavenly voice. He's never been quite this bewitched before but his mind will not allow him to forget her...or maybe he simply doesn't want to forget her.
Peter excuses himself from his father as he walks towards the side of the ballroom. He knows that all of this, all these people celebrating are for him, but he's the most miserable in this room. He doesn't feel like his situation is worth celebrating. He notices his soon to be wife, gabbing with some women in the corner, she catches his gaze and shyly waves towards him. She's beautiful, an angel glistening under the candlelight, but he felt nothing for her no matter how hard he tries to. Would this be his life now? A marriage filled without compassion, without communication, and most importantly without love? Sure, he could probably grow to care for Alice but he cannot help but compare her to the woman he met weeks ago in Chicago.
Peter walks to the bar grabbing a glass of champagne from one of the waiters carrying a tray. He notices that no one's eyes are on him and he takes out the small folded note. He peels open the folds of the note and in delicately written handwriting it reads:
Peter closes the note and places it back inside his jacket's pocket. Who is this mystery woman and why does she want to speak with him? For a moment he decides that he will not go. He has no reason to be sneaking off onto the balcony with some woman he's never met. Yet, as he thinks about that voice, one so familiar, he decides that he has to know who she is. He wouldn't be able to put that voice to rest if he didn't discover the person behind the mask.
Peter sneaks out quicker than he thought possible heading down the corridors towards the balcony. He remembers being a child running down these halls, laughing and playing with his friend Alfie. Life seemed so much easier back then and he never would have imagined his life ending up like this.
