Prologue
October 31, 1981
It was a cold, quiet night in Godric Hollow. Parents and children around sat in their homes as they drank butterbeer, laughed, and told stories about monsters. It wasn't uncommon to hear a child's giggle coming from one of the houses and the twinkle of candlelight shining down onto the gravel. Most just came back from trick-or-treating within the muggle neighborhoods and digging their stash of candy. Drunks were still at bars, finding what next to make a toast to and laughing with each other. No one thought that tonight would be anything special. All thought it was a day to embrace and to forget the worries of the war that hung over their heads.
No one was looking out the window at the man draped in black apparated in the middle of the town square. They didn't see his red eyes sparkling as he glanced at the numbers on houses nor the smirk that formed on his face. He was like a silent storm slowly drifting into the town, ready to destroy everything in his path. He gripped in wand in hand as he stalked down the street. A hood covered his face, hiding it from any eyes. Maybe, if they did then someone could change the future.
That night, Lily and James Potter were no different as they sat by the fire in the safe house Dumbledore prepared for them. It was small, James always complained about the size, and made sounds. However, Lily didn't care because her babies were safe. They choose their secret keeper carefully, knowing that he wouldn't betray them. Peter owned them too much, he owed James to much. It was a happy thought that rang through their heads as they held their babies.
James held their daughter, Amber, in his arms with a grin on his face. Amber had his hair, curly and hard to control, tan, and eyes. She looked like a Potter and he couldn't help but picture his mother adoring her as he had. Lily held their son, Harry, laying on her lap and watching him reach his palms out for her. He had her eyes, paleness, and the Potter's hair. It was the one thing she had heard her husband point out repeatedly but loved his eyes. Those bright green eyes staring at her seemed to be screaming that they had all the answers.
"James," She said, letting the little boy held her pointer finger. "I think it's time for the twins too-"
Then they heard it.
The loud, ugly boom came from the front door. The hinges ripped from the door frame as the wizard stalked in. Those red eyes scanned the hallway, kicking a piece of wood out of his way. He suppressed a grin on face, knowing that finally, he would kill the one thing that would get in his way. He destroyed them before they could rise up and attempted to defeat him. To him, it didn't matter that they were a child. They were going to be in his way and he was going to kill it.
James gripped his daughter to his chest as he looked at his wife. He looked back and forth between his wife and the door. The sound of shoes slowly getting closer echoed off the walls. He handed his daughter to his wife, knowing she would protect them. "You need to take the twins and run."
Her eyes widened. "But-"
"I'll hold him off."
She wanted to fight him, to hide the twins under the invisibility cloak that Dumbledore had borrowed and helped her husband. She was a fighter like him but knew better than stay when her angels were in danger. Finally, she stood up and held both children in each arm as she darted to the stairs in the kitchen. The confused painting watched her run, mumbling something under their breaths.
Blood pounded in her ear as she ran, unable to hear her the man yell "stupefy" and her husband falling back on the ground. She didn't see the man following her up the stairs or the excitement in his eyes. Amber whined, her hands gripping her mother's robes, and cried but Harry just stared at the man. Not understanding what was truly going on, Harry tilted his head in confusion.
Lily raced to the twin's room, pushing the door open, and ignoring the handle slamming against the wall. She raced to the crib on the farthest side of the room, slipping her children there. Before she could turn around, beg the man to take her and not the children, she was stupefied like her husband. Her daughter cried louder out of confusion as the man crept closer.
He reached into the crib, brushing his fingers over Harry's face. "You have her eyes."
At that moment, the man grabbed his wand and pointed it at the boy. He glanced at the woman on the floor, the one who looked to much like his love. The woman who left him in the middle of the night, leaving only a note behind all those years ago. He glared back at the boy, sharing the same Avada Kedavra eyes, making his stomach turn in guilt. However, he wasn't called a dark lord for anything.
The words rolled off his tongue, "Avada Kedavra."
Sparks flew across the room, hitting the child and then bouncing back to the man. He disappeared, leaving nothing but the dark cloak he wore on the ground. No saw a chip of wood hitting Amber's face, leaving a zig-zag across her left eye. Nor did they really see who defeated the Dark Lord that night.
When Lily and James woke up, they saw the scars and Amber's arms wrapped over her brother in a protective position. James jumped to conclusions, declaring it was their daughter and told Dumbledore. Lily had questioned it but went along with what her husband had been saying. After all, she started thinking the same thing.
