The double-doors of the elementary school building busted open as a stampede of children ran out towards the playground; some running towards the sandpit, some towards the swings, and most, towards the jungle gym.
It was their time of recess and the kids spent it how most kids would—whether it be playing with their friends, building sandcastles/burying things, or even challenging who could climb atop the monkey bars.
One kid, however, decided to spend his recess under a tree, all by himself, happily taking care of his digital pet Tamagotchi he had gotten as a gift from his parents for his eighth birthday.
This kid was none other than Park Jisung.
Shy and closed off were the words people would often use to describe him; never having any friends to invite over and never wanting any friends, to begin with. He liked being alone, keeping inside his own personal bubble, often thinking that the kids his age were both ignorant and annoying to be around.
"Whatcha, you do~in'?"
The sudden voice shocked Jisung in his place, flinching at the sight of a boy who hovered over him, interested in the small device in his hands.
"What's that?" the boy asked, squatting down and shuffling closer to Jisung, who leaned away, disliking the sudden invasion of personal space.
"None of your business, now go away," Jisung snapped, watching as the boy's lips pushed out into a pout.
"But you'll be all by yourself," the boy countered, his pout disappearing and replacing with a bright smile. "Ooo! I can be your friend! My name is Chenle, but you can call me lele," he beamed.
Jisung stared at the boy, confused. In his entire life, no one has ever wanted to befriend him. The Kids he met were usually quick to call him mean because of his attitude, resulting in him having no friends.
"I'm Jisung," he mumbled, suddenly becoming shy. He noticed the smile on Chenle's face becoming impossibly brighter than before.
"Can I call you Ji?" Chenle asked, tilting his head slightly while gazing into the eyes of his new friend, whose cheeks tinted pink.
"S-sure," Jisung stuttered out, averting his gaze from Chenle's.
"So what's that?" Chenle asked again, plopping down on his butt beside Jisung.
Thinking, why not? Jisung handed Chenle the device, watching the boy's eyes sparkle with interest. "This is a Tamagotchi. It's a digital pet you hatch and take care of," he explained, gaining a gasp from the other.
"A pet?! Inside this tiny thing?!" Chenle was dumbfounded that there was such a thing. "That's so cool!"
Jisung had to admit, Chenle's voice was unnecessarily loud and kind of irritating, but for the sake of keeping his new friend, he decided to let him be, indulging it for the first time in his life. And he oddly didn't mind. Chenle was someone he wanted to keep inside his bubble.
"Would you like to take care of it with me? It can be our pet, I don't mind sharing if it's with you," Jisung offered.
Chenle gaped at the boy. "You mean it?" he questioned, watching Jisung nod his head in confirmation, making him burst with excitement. "I'd love to! We're gonna be the best parents ever!" he squealed, engulfing Jisung in a hug.
Jisung froze in Chenle's tight grip. This was the first hug he's ever gotten from someone other than his parents, strangely bringing a warm-fuzzy feeling to his heart.
Parting from the hug, Jisung pointed at the Tamagotchi in Chenle's hand before telling him, "You can keep it this week and then we'll switch, that way both of us can take care of it."
Chenle nodded his head, smiling at him once more. "Okay, I'll make sure to take good care of our Tama," he said.
"Tama?"
"Yeah, that will be our pet's name. Tama," he repeated, witnessing a smile tug at Jisung's lips for the first time.
A new friendship blossomed that day.
The two boys became inseparable, doing almost everything and anything together. Whether it be partnering up in class, playing together at recess, and even setting up playdates to go to each other's houses.
Everything was going great for the two, that is, up until recess on Monday, when Chenle had to give Jisung some bad news.
"What?! How could you?!" Jisung fumed angrily at the teary-eyed boy in front of him.
"I-I'm sorry, Ji. M-my mom took me to China over the weekend and I-I forgot to bring it with me," Chenle tried to explain while fighting back his tears.
Jisung stuffed the small device in his pocket, giving Chenle a cold glare before saying the words that would end their friendship for good, "I hate you! I can't believe I trusted you! I don't want to be your friend anymore! You're annoying and stupid! Don't ever talk to me again!" he yelled, not caring for the boy who began to cry in front of him.
"I-I'm s-sor-ry," Chenle whimpered, trembling as the tears streamed down his cheeks. Every word Jisung threw at him, stabbed straight to his pure heart.
Not saying another word, Jisung walked away from Chenle, finding another secluded spot to hang out and be angry on his own. As he sat on a bench staring at the tomb of his Tamagotchi, he vowed to himself; he'd never let anyone step foot in his bubble ever again, and he will never forgive Chenle for betraying his trust. Deciding from this day on that Zhong Chenle will forever be his worst enemy.
And just like that, the blossomed friendship withered.
