Evan's POV - September 14th (Tyler's Birthday)
The morning was harsh on us, as Jonathan and I woke up super early. Recently, Jonathan has been managing my meals, even though I was fine. I have been grateful for him these past two days though, and slowly we have been getting back into our routine. The awkwardness is still there; we just have to get through it.
I'm standing at the wonky kitchen island, chopping some lettuce. Jonathan's across from me, playing a hand of solitaire by himself. I'm cooking some fried eggs and having it with a fruit salad at four in the morning.
Jonathan flips all the cards face up and clump them together, shuffling them. A yawn escaped from behind his mask, something he can even wear at four in the morning, I don't know how.
"Another bust?" I said as I gather up the chopped lettuce and move it to the stove behind me.
Jonathan laughs halfheartedly. "Yeah," I can hear the cards slapping against each other. "Can't wait for breakfast though."
"Same here," I pile the lettuce into a bowl. "We need the energy today."
My eyes catch Jonathan's when I look at him, or it feels like it as we instinctively stare. Jonathan, though he had something to say, stifled his breath when our gazes met. He cleared his throat and spoke.
"What's on the agenda for today?"
I pull out some strawberries and a knife to cut them. "Well after a day at the movies and a restaurant, Tyler's heading back here with the others so we can have a drink." It took me a minute to realize the problem. "Will you be alright?"
Jonathan sounded confused. "What do you mean?"
I turned to him and pointed at my face, as if it was on my face. "Your mask. We're heading out and shit, you know." I paused for a second. "Will you be ok?"
The silence hung in the air, damp morning dew over the counter.
There was the slightest shot of humor trying to escape Jonathan's lips. "I'll be right as rain," the cheerful tone continues. "We're here to get together and celebrate, after all."
I was worried. There was no way I wouldn't be. Anyone wearing a mask going to a theater, a eating, and drinking, is gonna look suspicious. "Jon are you sure?"
The more pauses that continued in the room, the more unsettling it made the tone. Jonathan just sat there, shuffled a bit, and fiddled with the cards a bit.
Quietly, he speaks. "Yeah, Evan."
Was he annoyed for me prying too much? Maybe I did overstep... I sulked back to making the last of the dish as I hear Jonathan sigh from behind me.
After I served our breakfast (which was eaten in awkward silence), we slowly got ready for today's agenda. We're meeting the other guys (except for Tyler) for confirmation around 10, meeting up with Tyler for a movie at the cinemas around 12ish. Everyone's gonna branch off to their movie and afterwards we head to an amusement park near the boardwalk to burn our energy. Afterwards, we'll be hungry enough for food and drinks. It seemed perfect for a birthday bash.
Since we started pretty early in the day (granted we don't sleep well), getting ready "slowly" meant we watched TV (or napped) until 7:00. I got ready into a classy leather-man jacket and a red shirt to go with my blue jeans. I styled my hair with some gel, leaving it to be more civilized look than normal. Normally I would sweep may hair up with some gel; only this time I went up and over for a more classy look. Hopefully it can deter attention from my eye bags.
