They had just finished protesting for their freedom of speech at the town hall. They had went back to the school, to discuss future plans of the press. As the students were discussing this with their teacher, Miss. Stacy, Anne suddenly dragged Gilbert away from the others, "Let's go outside to chat for a bit" she told him quietly. "Sure" he replied swiftly while looking at her with a confused expression.
They sat down on the steps, right outside of the school doors. "So" Gilbert began. "So" Anne continued, "what did you say to change everyone's opinion of me?" She thinks back to when everyone in school first read her article and were all upset with her, even Diana. But Diana never were truly her friend, were she?, She thought solemnly.
"I just told them that you spoke the truth, that you stood up for someone who didn't know how to speak up yet", Gilbert interrupted her thoughts while smiling at her. "Thank you, hey, shouldn't we be arguing by now?" Anne asked him humorously. "Probably..." He replied and laughed quietly, "Do you want to start?" "I don't know what to argue about, do you?, she replied while looking at him with a smile. "Me neither, after all this time", he started saying, "who knew we'd be such a good, T-E-A-M".
He spelled the last part, since they both used to have spelling competitions against each other and he missed how they used to be. They used to be closer, but they started drifting apart that day on the train where Anne rudely told me that she didn't need him. That hurt his feelings, and made him think that there was no possibility of Anne liking him back.
Shortly after that he met Winnifred, she was no Anne, but she was good enough for him at the time. Last week Anne ran away crying after he introduced Winnifred to her however, which now gave him hope that maybe she does have feelings for him after all. It's hard to tell with Anne however and he might be reading to much into the whole situation. "Winnifred..." Anne suddenly interrupted his thoughts. What about her?, he wondered. "Is a lucky girl!" She quickly stated, "I should go back". She quickly stood up and ran back inside the school building.
She left Gilbert stunned on the steps outside the school building, pondering about what just happened. She likes me? He thought, I hope, why else would she say that? He put his hands in his hair and said out loud, "oh, Anne... what will I do now?
