I have never understood how people go through their days without coffee. My body is a car and coffee is the fuel. I spent my first few weeks at Smitty University finding the perfect coffee shop. It is pretty and quaint. It has no wait in the morning. They know exactly what I want and what time I am going to be there. However, this morning I walked to the shop to find a foreclosure sign on the door. I guess the short line was a sign of low business instead of fast customer service. I don't really have the time to go to another coffee shop, but I need the coffee. I spent all night re-reading the works of Virginia Woolf. I don't have to have it read yet, but I love Virginia Woolf and wanted to be ahead of the syllabus.
The closest coffee shop to the school is a busy, hectic little shop called Mugs & Hugs. It is where all of the college students who are running late or are too lazy to walk off campus go. The line was so long the I could barley enter the door. I pushed my way in and laid my back on the door sighing. This was going to throw my whole day off. After what felt like twenty years of army crawling through molasses, I made it to the front of the line. I couldn't brave myself enough to look at the clock. I knew for certain I had to be twenty minutes late. I didn't trust them enough yet to try one of their specialty drinks, so I just ordered a black coffee. I moved from my spot in line and took a seat at the table opposite to the pick up station. Looking out the window I studied the people around me. There were men and women running all around and hailing taxis. One girl looked like she was having an even worse day than me. She had ruffled hair, her jacket was half on, and her bright white shirt had a big stain of coffee on it that still looked wet. She must have spilled while running down the sidewalk. Another dude ran what looked like through her to get where he was going. she luckily moved out of the way. He had no care in the world for her. He passed a girl in joggers running behind her dog that she had on a leash. Each person had a different story, but they all seemed to possess the same goal. They wanted to get to where they were going. I don't think I have ever related to anything more. Everything I do in life is to get me somewhere-to a goal.
My mind snaps away from the window when a boy in ripped jeans and a red apron puts my cup of coffee in front of me. I looked up at him confused of why they didn't just call my name. He seemed to have since my confusion, because he replied to my unasked question.
"You seemed lost in your mind and I didn't want to make you come out of your trance", he stated sheepishly.
"oh, thank you. But, how did you know which one was mine? How did you know my name?", I asked suspicious of this man I have never met.
"I've noticed you around school a few times. You always move at such a speed it doesn't surprise me that you haven't noticed me. Plus, we have English 1102 together."
I never knew that. How oblivious I can be sometimes. I will have to keep an eye out for him today. The thought of school rushed back to my mind. I must be so late. I finally worked up enough courage and looked at the clock. I still had five minutes tp get there. I quickly thanked him for bringing me the coffee and ran off towards my History 2112 class. As I ran, part of my mind drifted to wonder who was sitting, looking out a window, and wondering what I was running towards. It is weird to think that someone might actually care about what I am doing.
I made it to the building that my class is in. I started bolting up the stairs faster than I ever knew I could run. I felt someone running beside me and turned my head. It was my History professor with a coffee cup in his hand. All he said was "Why did they close the shop?". When we reached his class room he let me go in first so that I wasn't late. Since I was there before the teacher he wasn't sure what time I had arrived. I could hear the quotation marks around that statement.
He had to be one of my favorite teachers. He was blunt and crass. He started most of his lessons with "now this will probably get me fired", but I loved it. He was never to say it 'how it is', even if 'how it is' had a few cuss words. I call them wordy dirties. He always related history to current events. I have always found how history repeats itself to be interesting.
Today's class was short, but I still enjoyed it. We studied the American Revolution. I have always loved to study wars. I hate conflict, but for some. reason the subject of war has always attracted me. My next class is English 1102. I wonder if that boy from earlier will be there. I am not sure why I care, but he sparked interest this morning.
