I wake to the sound of loud pounding against my door. "Get up, its your first day of misery." Penny says with a echo of laughter. I groan and roll on my stomach, pushing my face deep into the soft plush pillow. I can still smell the scent of my Mom in the woven plush fabric. She sewed me this pillow when I was 8 saying it was a new one from the tooth fairy. The memory makes me smile and I sit up to face the horrid day.
After a shower, I make my way towards the kitchen and find my Aunt sitting on a bulky looking man. She's giggling to something he whispers in her ear. Her laugh use to sound so full of life but something about with changed. Her laugh sounds almost..drained. I grab a piece of toast and quickly head for stairs hoping not to be seen. "Theres my 'Special' niece I was talking about!" Too late. Penny and the man laugh hysterically. Obviously she said some interesting words about me. I shoot something out of my mouth that sounds bitter "By the way Penny, the man you hooked up with last night called again. You might want to answer this time." I leave the room with gaping mouths and head for my room.
A hour later i'm ready for school. A simple ponytail, my new grey sweater, black leggings and grey high top converse is what I decide to wear today. I push up my glasses and gather my stuff. I head out my bedroom and down the stairs. Penny and the man is no longer sitting in the living room There standing now, arguing about the words I said. I don't feel guilty.. maybe I should. I don't think my parents would have liked that I stooped to her level. Grudgingly, I speak up. "I'm sorry it was a joke. The joke went too far and I didn't mean it in a serious way." I stand awkwardly as the look at me. There eyes make way to each other slowly and then all of a sudden they're eating each other's faces.Pretending to throw up, I leave the room and start my way towards high school.
Sitting in my car I look at the school. I can already tell I'm gonna be lost. The school is- huge. There are four big buildings and two little ones on the outskirts. The parking lot is flooding with buses, cars, and teenagers. I grab my Schedule out of my bag and look at my first class. Science. With reluctance I grab the car door handle and get out of the truck.
I maneuver my way through the school avoiding peoples eye contact. With my eyes focus on the schedule and I walk into something hard. I stumble backwards a little surprisingly, keeping my balance. "Sorry I was-" my thought ends and is continued by a new one. I recognize those blue eyes.
Jay smiles a toothy smile and says "it's a small world Miss. Becker." Shocked, I look at him confused. "How do you know my name?" He simply pulls a rectangular shape out of his pocket and hands it to me. My phone. "You know this is the type of things stockers do." I say shaking my head a little taking my phone out of his hand. "Your welcome." He ignores my comment completely and snatches my schedule away from me. I go to reach for it but it's too late.
"Okay good we have the first class together. I need at least one freckled face friend for company.""You're weird, you know that?" I say putting my phone in my backpack pocket. We make our way up the first floor of stairs and walk in a comfortable silence. "Shouldn't you be walking your girlfriend to class?" I ask looking over at his dark blue pair of converse. "You're quite Observant." He says as if he figured out a great mystery."It wasn't that difficult to figure out with your make out session in front of the dressing rooms." I say quietly and he smiles a little. "Funny too."
We walk into class a couple minutes early. "Hey Jay!" Says a group of guys that look like there from the Big Bang theory. He walks towards them and leaves me to find a seat. I'm about to walk towards a table full of what looks like preppy girls when I hear my name. "Violet come sit here." Jay motions his hand to a empty seat next to him at a lab table. I hesitate and decide to go sit. When I sit down he leans close to my ear. The sudden movement surprises me but I don't move. He smells like the icy spearmint Gum I get for Christmas almost every year. He's voice tickles against my ear when he says "planning on my being a stuck up cheerleader?" "At least I wouldn't have an inflated ego and a bad sense of humor" he flashes that well known grin.
When class finishes were assigned to a project with our lab partners to make a 3D structure of the solar system. I gather my stuff and head towards the door. Jay catches up quickly behind me and follows me out. "Try not to miss me." "Trust me I won't." I say back mocking his tone. "Ouch" he places his hand over where his heart is."Am I missing something?" Carrie walks up behind him and pulls the cuff of his flannel shirt towards her face and kisses him hard. People whoop and Chant passing by. I turn away and make my way down the stairs.
Classes go by a blur and it's finally lunch. I bought strawberries to snack on and I find a place under a tree with some shade from the bright sun. I grab my phone out of my bag and turn it on. 5 miss calls from Andy appear on the screen. I send him a text "Hi I'm fine, lost my phone but now it's found. Call me when you're out of school xo" I Just send the text when I feel a shadow cast over me. "Do you have to follow me around everywhere?" "Excuse me?" I look up and see a Unrecognizable face. A girl with blonde curly hair holds a lunch pail.
"Sorry I thought you were someone else." She laughs a little "it's fine. Do you mind if I sit?" "Sure I'm not really overwhelmed with people that wants too" she nods "me either" We talk a little until the bell rings to get to your next class. Apparently her name is Susie and she likes to ride horses.
A couple hours later I'm back at home hidden beneath my bed sheets trying to go to bed early, feeling exhausted. I also try to block out the noise of Penny and her equally obnoxious friends getting drunk. I hear my phone ring and I pick it up and put on my glasses to see what it says.
"Library tomorrow after school?" "Who is this?" After a moment of nothing my phone bings again, "stocker. I might have grabbed your number out of your phone." I set the phone down and my phone rings again.
"Nice wallpaper by the way."
My face beams red as I think about my wallpaper is a picture of me and my parents smiling on Christmas Eve after making desert. That Christmas was the one me and Andy attempted to make gingerbread cookies and the turned out to look like mini slender mans."Goodnight Mom and Dad." I whisper half asleep and my eyes fall shut again.
