There are 4 tones in Mandarin

The flat tone

The rising tone

The falling-rising

And the falling

So

妈 ma - mom (flat)

麻 ma- numb (rising)

马 ma- horse (falling rising)

骂 ma- scold (falling)

If you got any of it wrong, it will change the whole meaning of the sentence
