Entry Two
February 26th, 1618
Monday 13th January. That was the day I got the diary that I am currently writing, as a present for my fourteenth birthday. I do not know why I started writing in it only a week ago, but perhaps it is because I did not want to fill the pages up too quickly. My presents are few and far between, and I do not wish to waste them.
I never have a proper celebration on my birthday, but I do not have to help Joan with her work on them. I do not understand why my birthday is even celebrated, since the time at which I was born was the reason I never grew up with my mother and father; but whenever I mention this to Joan, she says that this is no reason to be unhappy. I also do not know how Joan knows when my birthday is, however, I presume that my parents told her when they explained about why I was left in the forest.
I get one small present once a year, usually some clothes that Joan had made, and sometimes some fruits and mushrooms from the forest that surrounds our house. This is the first time I have gotten a diary. I think Joan wishes for me to improve my writing skills. She was the one who had taught me how to write, after all, since I did not have a proper education.
After my birthday, the days went back to normal. However, today brought bad news - that being that witch trials had recently been held at a town which was not near, but not very far away either, and it seems like the witch hunters are heading our way. They have not reached the village at the edge of the woods quite yet, but it is on their way, and Joan says that they will arrive there in five or six days. I can only hope they do not find us, too - I do not think they would put Joan on trial, but if they somehow find out about when I was born, and how Joan was the one who raised me, I will put us both in danger.
A.N. So, as promised, here's the second part!
