CHAPTER 4
LUKE
The next day before I wake up for work, knocks were on the door. The knocks sounded urgent so I quickly woke up but when I got out of my room, the knocking stopped and I saw my mother hugging Shermaine. I wondered what went wrong so I went to Ginger who was already awake.
"What happened?" I asked her quietly.
She shrugged, "I think it's something about losing her son."
I knew Shermaine's son. We used to work together in one of Hena's requests. His name was James, I wonder what could have happened. Did he get punished from Hena?
"I can't believe he's gone... He has never talked about being sad here why is he suddenly not here?" and Shermaine sobbed even more.
"What was he last doing?" my mother asked, still trying to calm her down.
Shermaine shrugged, "He went into his room and told me good night. I didn't know what he was doing in his room..."
My mother was speechless, no other words she could possibly said except wait for James to return. Ginger and I looked at each other and slowly agreed to leave the situation to my mother.
We walked out through the back door near the kitchen and we met Rooter there.
"Have you heard? James is missing!" he exclaimed.
"Yeah, his mum was at my house crying," I said.
"Strange things are happening, Luke. James is missing, now a new girl is here. What is going on?" Rooter panicked.
Every time Rooter panicked, he releases a hell lot of water and he gets dehydrated in a flash. That's why I do my best to calm him down. After awhile, we went down to the now newly made fence at the shores of the lake. I looked at my design but I somehow felt a pinch of guilt. What were we doing here? Locking every one out?
"With the fence all done, what are you going to do?" Ginger asked.
Rooter and I shared glances, I smiled at her and said, "Well, this is actually both our secrets but you barely know anyone here so come and follow us."
I lead the way.
Behind my cottage, we had to pass through a small path with puddles of quick mud so we had to be careful. The trees were tall and most of the sunlight are blocked by the canopies of the trees.
"Where are we going?" Ginger asked, sweetly.
"It's a surprise," now it was Rooter's turn to give a cheeky smile.
It shut Ginger up for awhile when we reached a small river and we crossed it by jumping on rocks.
"Careful, it's slippery."
She gave a sweet smile and I held out my hand to pull her. Her eyes shone bright under the sunlight. It sparkled and it made her look much younger than she already is.
We finally reached a tall wall filled with vines. It looks more scattered like it was a dead end.
"What in the world?" Ginger mumbled as I moved the vines in a certain pattern until it had an ancient D shape.
D for Decarte.
I pressed one of the so called flowers and a secret door opened. I nudged Ginger to walk in first while Rooter and I followed her from behind. It was a dark and tall cave. We walked, and once we saw light, Ginger gasped.
Sunlight shone through a small hole of rocks. As we got closer, we entered a little place I'd like to call Quietude, the peaceful. Rooter told her.
I came here every time we finish one of Hena's request or whenever I felt a little too sad. I'd either come here with Rooter or sometimes alone. Hena controls the whole island, so she does check here once in awhile. She has her own timing. That was how I monitored what time I would come here.
Ginger admired how the water fell from the top from what looked like no where. And the crystal clear river that looked like lead to no where. How the greens were different than the ones she had seen outside. The sky was bright blue and the clouds made shapes all three of us tried to made up. There was a flower garden where Ginger spent more time on. I kept an eye on her once in awhile.
"Whatchu staring at, Wingman?" Rooter nudged me with one of his branches.
"Keeping an eye on her, you idiot," I chuckled.
"What are we gonna do, Luke?" he sighed.
"We're gonna get outta here," I said firmly, staring at Ginger's gentle movements on the flowers once more.
