CHAPTER 1

LUKE

I woke up to the sound of Rooter shouting for me to wake up. I froze and saw my wings squeezing themselves together. Why was it so cold? I got up slowly with my long legs shaking and I wrapped myself with my leaf blanket.

"Will you hurry up? Hena is making us do something new. She want us ready by noon, if not you know what she'd do," Rooter rushed me.

"Alright alright, stop being such a mum. It's annoying," I rolled my eyes.

Rooter is my best friend. Tree creature or people before like to call them Greenies. Greenies are the strongest creatures here is Decarte Island. How did I end up being friends with a Greenie? Well, I was eight years old when we did. My mother warned me about Queen Hena so I shouldn't walk near the lakes. It was the border to the outside world. I still had no idea what was out there, though. One night, I creeped out of our cottage and walked to the lakes. That was where we met.

"Beautiful isn't it?" Rooter spoke when I stood beside him.

"What is out there?" I asked, curious.

"No idea. I wonder what happens to the people who go beyond this," Rooter spoke again.

Rooter and I had the same curiosity and after that night, we were friends. You might be asking, what am I? I am a decendent of the fairies or we like to call Wingers here, and Human. My dad was a Winger, one of the head of the Wingers but after he passed on, his best friend took over. My mum was a Human, and what my grandma like to call them, Humanitarian, the curse of emotions.

I was one of the rare creatures that had feelings. Stupid things they are, Rooter used to say. Who needs feelings? Emotions are what brought us in torture now. Too much greed for power and control.

Rooter is tall. And I mean it. He is approximately five inches higher than me. Well, he is a tree. We walked out from my cottage and walked to our meeting place, Hollow's Ground (that's where every one gather whenever Queen Hena call upon us for yet another of her greedy requests). Hollow's Ground used to be a place where children get to play with twinkling lights from the Juvenile, Mother of all Greenies. Her leaves were shiny and they sparkled just like how stars do in the sky. But when Queen Hena was ruler of Decarte, her lights became dim and eventually none at all. Sometimes when no one was around, I'd walk to Juvenile and she would make a little smile with her lights.

Decarte Island was my home and I hated the fact that the one who was bound to be our greatest guardian had used greed and vainity to conquer my homeland with cruelty.

Once Rooter and I reached Hollow's Ground, everyone of them were there. There were the Greenies, like Rooter, the Wingers, the Humans, the Merpeople-their fin changes to legs on land- and lastly the Magrixes.

The Magrixes is the same as Queen Hena and her sister June. They are like witches, but not really. They do not have powers unless blessed or cursed by the power of the universe. According to legend, Queen Hena was cursed with the power to fly and was blessed with the gift of beauty. Every time she came to face us, most of the creatures end up drooling over her beauty. Yes, I do admit, she had a beauty like no one I had ever seen, but her heart was not and that isn't something I would drool for.

"I have called upon all of you here for a different reason today," Queen Hena appeared from the air.

"Yeah,  build another luxury thing for you," Rooter whispered, annoyed.

"I called upon you, because I need all your man power. I need you to build a fence along the lakes. I will allow no one to run away from Decarte Island or enter here too. I don't understand why would they want to run away from the beautiful queen. Do you?"

No one said a word.

"Good. I expect it to be done in 48 hours. Chop chop!"

Chop chop! Her favourite words.

We all sighed after she flew away. "Another 48 hours of unproductiveness," Rooter complained.

"Rooter, we gotta think positive. We're working out," I joked.

"Who would want you even with big muscles Wingman?" he teased.

Wingman is the descendant of Wingers and Humans.

"Wingmans," I answered dully.

We both laughed. I seriously have no idea what would happen if I didn't have Rooter around. Life would be plain boring and without laughters. We got back to my cottage because I wanted to get our Glucandy. It gives us maximum energy. I gave one to Rooter although he could make his own food.

"Take that as a treat," I said as I took mine.

"Well, let's get to work."

Rooter and I walked to the lakes and saw the others crouching at one place just at the shore of the lake. We rushed to see what it was and I couldn't keep my eyes off.

"It's a girl..." Rooter mumbled.

Probably around the age of thirteen and had golden yellow hair. She was a human.

I crouched down to see her condition and her eyes popped open to see my brown eyes staring into hers.

"Where am I?"
