The day started out great. You and Katakuri decided to mosey around an empty beach on the island with Jasper. It was warm out and there was a slight breeze, carrying the ocean scent and the sound of the gulls cries. Jasper was in Katakuri's arms, trying to talk to him with nonsense noises as small children do. Your husband nodded along with his son's nonsense, acting like he understood every attempt at speech. The baby was now almost a year and a half old, he was growing like a weed.
You watched them happily, loving the way Katakuri's eyes lit up when he looked at the boy. He didn't carry Jasper around when he was near other people, he couldn't contain the need to coddle the boy if he did. So moments like this were both yours and his favorite, moments when he felt free to express his adoration for his son.
Katakuri moved Jasper closer to his face so he could get a better look at him, in return, the child started grabbing at his scarf and erupting into delighted giggles. "Oh no you don't." He gently pulled his son's hands away from the scarf. "You don't want to see that. Trust me."
"Kata, he's just a baby, he's not going to be judgy. He can't even talk!" You smiled at the man.
"It'll scare him, I'd rather not." He pulled his scarf up further around his mouth.
"It will not," you walked up to him and tugged on his vest so he'd bring his face down to your level. "and even if it did, he'd get used to it in no time anyway." He let you push his scarf down far enough to reveal his mouth. The scars that started from the corners of his mouth and the sharp protruding teeth were now visible.
The two of you looked at Jasper to see his reaction and as you suspected, the boy only wiggled in his father's arms and reached to touch him, curious about the part of his father he had yet to see before.
"See? Nothing scares him, just like his father." You gave Katakuri a wink as he straightened out and allowed Jasper to touch him. His little fingers first poking at his scars before wrapping around one of his lower teeth and giving it a tug.
Katakuri chuckled. "Fine, you're right. He really doesn't mind." The boy continued to gurgle away as he poked and prodded his father. You let them have their moment together and wandered off closer to the shore.
You slipped out of your sandals and pulled your sundress up around your thighs and stepped into the water. It was chilly, but welcoming. You sighed, content with everything going on around you. It was nice to have days like this when Katakuri didn't have work and you could spend time together as a family. Usually it was just you and Jasper while he worked. Though sometimes family would come visit, usually people like Brûlèe or Smoothie. Most of the men kept to themselves.
The sounds of splashing water came from somewhere to your right, further down the shore. You thought it was your two boys at first until you realized they were still farther back, continuing the baby talk. The splashing stopped but it was followed by what sounded like a yip and whining.
Puzzled, you looked off in the direction of the noises and saw the form of some creature stumbling in the sand. As you watched it, it let out another yip and collapsed. You snatched up your discarded sandals and jogged towards it. As you got closer it looked more and more like a large dog. It was totally grey except for it's face, which was white. The fur was soaked and covered in wet sand.
You slowed down as you got closer, now only a few meters away. The face looked....different. You didn't know what the creature was but it most definitely was not a dog. The white face looked more like a mask. It was more rounded off where a muzzle would have been on a dog, and there where teeth protruding out where the mouth was. The edges of the mouth curled up, creating the look of a permanent smile and a blue and pink striped tongue lolled out of its mouth as it panted. The strangest part of it is where the eyes should have been, there were empty holes.
You moved your focus from the "face" of the animal to it's body. It looked muscular, but starved at the same time. Skin clung to ribs so closely that you could count them without having to touch. You could see it's spine as well, as if little meat stuck to it's bones. And yet, it's legs looked powerful and lean and though the neck was covered in a thick layer of fur, it seemed to be in good shape as well.
The creature wagged it's stump of a tail as it noticed you and tried to get up, only to fall back into the sand on its side. It yipped more loudly than before, almost like a fox.
"(Y/n)?" You looked back to see Katakuri searching for you.
"Over here!" You waved at him until he saw you. "I found something!"
He quickly approached you until he noticed the animal. "What the hell is that?"
"No idea." You looked back down at it. It seemed friendly enough, even if it looked strange. It acted almost tame. "I heard it splashing around so I came to check it out." You moved a little closer to it and reached a hand out to it's shoulder.
"Don't touch it." Katakuri rumbled. "It could be dangerous."
"I don't think it is...." You murmured. You moved closer again until you felt cold wet fur under your fingertips. The muscles under your touch twitched, but the creature layed still, tongue still lolled out as it breathed heavily. You husband watched as you continued to touch it, hand now moving up to its neck. It earned a little waggle of the animals tail and whine.
The poor thing was practically begging for the attention. Finally, your hand rested on the edge of the mask, except it wasn't a mask. You pulled away and let out a little gasp. Katakuri stepped forward, hugging Jasper to his chest. "What?"
"The face. It's all bone." You reached out again and sure enough, it was. The dog like animal could still feel your touch though. It's tail began thumping at a furious pace as you slowly pet the top of it's head. "Kata..."
His face darkened as you looked over your shoulder at him. "No (Y/n), don't say it."
Too bad, you'd already made up your mind. "We should take it home."
Katakuri groaned. "We can't start bringing strange things home. What if it decided to turn and attack you or Jasper?"
"First off," you glanced down at the animal to confirm something. "He is not some strange thing. And secondly, he won't do that."
"How do you know?"
"I checked."
"No," he groaned again. "Not that. How do you know it won't be aggressive later on?"
You shrugged. "I can't put my finger on it but I know he won't."
Katakuri knew he wasn't going to win this fight. So with a sigh he handed Jasper over to you before bending down over the animal and picking it up into his arms. It's stump continued to move at a vigorous pace and it yipped once again as it tried to settle into his arms. "Do you see the teeth on this thing?" Your husband questioned.
"Have you seen your own?" You shot back. "Yours don't make you some monster so don't assume his do either."
He grumbled as you two began the walk home. "Just so you know, this is your responsibility. We don't even know what's wrong with it so don't come crying to me if it dies."
You giggled as Jasper tried to reach over and touch the animal, now curious about it. "I'm sure he won't die. All he needs is some food and a good place to sleep."
"I'd rather we just get an actual dog instead." He was grumpy, but you couldn't help but notice as the animal curled up in his arms, he held it closer.

I thought I may need a break from this story but I really wanted to write more. So here part 2! Expect more fighting in this one with more of our gal's wolfy form~ The next chapter will have art of our critter, he is another character of mine I made years ago and absolutely love. I'll possibly even make new art of him at some point for this.
