The Letter

Ruby had explored her new house very quickly. It did indeed have a library, in fact, so splendid that the bookshelves seemed to reach to heaven. And this world, being the underworld, was far from that. She looked around in her new bedroom, seeing a snow-white letter. She carefully opened it, making sure not to tear the coffee-stained paper. It was clear that this had taken a while to write, since the handwriting seemed to change within every sentence.

Dear Ruby,

I am so pleased that you finally came here to join me!

I knew you would. Your mother and I had an agreement, but she didn't take her part.

So, I stole you. You are my daughter, Ruby. I won't let anything separate us again.

Your father,

 Sans.

Ruby's face went pallid. This couldn't be true! She'd met her father, though she didn't remember him, she knew who he was. His name is Gray Huntington. Or, was Gray Huntington. He died when Ruby was very young. Sans must have been lying. She began to question her very existence, and if this was all a dream. She pinched herself acutely, and winced.

WACK! The door swung open. She instinctively turned her head to find Sans standing in the doorway, flowers in his cold hands. He seemed to be genuine. She shook her head, closing her eyes and took in the situation. She reminded herself of the time when she was sent to the Guidance Counselor, and how it had felt the same as now. Fake.

"This can't be real," she exclaimed, "You're not my father! I met him years ago..." she trailed off before beginning to sob. She missed her dad deeply. It was if a piece of her heart was ripped from her, and to find that it was all for nothing? Her mind began to race. Her heartbeat quickened, and her tears began to fall. A gentle hand wiped them away.

"It is, Ruby. I have waited for you for so many long years..." His eye flashed ice-blue, and he pulled Ruby into a hug. They both smiled softly, and said nothing. It felt so peaceful. If only this feeling could last. Now, Ruby knew the truth. Why had her mother lied all those years? That was cruel and unnecessary. "You won't need to go back to your old world. You can stay here with me if you'd like. Forever." He whispered, breaking the silence. Despite their recent meeting, they felt inseparable already. Ruby was home. She wept, and nodded. She didn't want to stay with her lying mother anymore. Who knows what else she could have made up? What if Ruby wasn't even hers?

After a hesitant train of thought, Ruby spoke, "I'd like that."
