He lifted up our hands, fingers still intertwined and placed a soft peck on the back of my hand, his eyes on the road and a smile on his face while he did so. He looked so happy, so peaceful and so relieved to almost be there, with the snow fall getting heavier every minute. Just 7 more minutes from here on.
"It's going to be so cold when we arrive." I replied with a soft giggle when I remembered the last winter day we arrived there.
"We'll find a way to get warmed up quickly." He said a grin playing on his face as we both thought back of that great night. I longed for the taste of his lips and the way his body felt against mine. It hadn't been long since the last time I got to kiss him but he got me addicted to his touch.
I looked at the soft wrinkles in the corner of his eyes and the dimples in his cheeks. I looked at the perfect shape of his nose and the way his eyes were shining. I looked at his perfect lips and the smile that was formed on them. I admired every shape and outline of his face and the vibrations of his body when he let out a laugh. He was well aware of the way I admired his face and body. He knew how in love I was with every little thing he did and how addicted I was to his lips, his touch and his laugh. He knew how easily I could loose myself in his piercing blue eyes from the day we met.
I was in love with every little imperfection and every little scar or mark he had on his body.
"I love you Alice" he said as he looked at me shortly, his piercing blue eyes staring right into my green ones for just a second before looking ahead of him again.
"I love you too Luke." I said back, a smile covering my face before I looked ahead of me again.
I watched the snow fall down on the windshield and on the trees surrounding us. The road still too warm to allow the snow to stay on it. Just 3 more minutes, just 2 more turns and we would be there.
He approached the second last turn and slowed down like he should but the second he was turned, the bright headlights of another car came into sight. They were blinding us and Luke was squinting his eyes to even see something but when both of us failed to see the road, Luke pressed down on the honk and slowed down the car. The sound of the honk was deafening and the bright lights still blinding us, my mind was crashing and I wanted to close my eyes and cover my ears but instead I looked at Luke and held onto his hand so tightly. I went against my instinct, against what I've been doing for years and focused on him but the honk never became softer and the lights never became less bright.
Before we knew it, everything started to move too slow, too silent. The other car had hit us at the left front making us turn before fully crashing into Luke's side. He didn't slow down and I looked at Luke, both of us fully panicking yet so calm. The car soon started spinning and I held onto his hand until every movement stopped and the only sound I heard was the loud beep, the one you get after a loud concert but even louder and deafening like the honk of the car. I could feel our car was upside down but I couldn't move.
I was staring into Luke's piercing blue eyes while he stared into my bright green ones. The taste of blood filling my mouth.
He blinked slowly, blood running down his face that was coming from below his ear and I blinked too, the only movement my body was still able to make. He stared into my eyes again and I couldn't feel anything anymore except for his hand holding onto mine, I still heard the beeping noise and I saw his piercing blue eyes in front of me and his chest slowly rising and falling.
I saw them blink another time but this time it seemed to go even slower. He opened his blue eyes again to look at me, his eyes were calm and I was finding my calmth in them.
What happens after we crash?
His eyes closed again and I waited for them to open but they didn't open anymore. They stayed closed and I wanted to scream his name, I wanted to wake him up but my body couldn't find the strength to do it.
His eyes no longer opened, his chest no longer rose or fell and slowly the blood stopped streaming. I felt tears leaving my eyes when I closed my eyes again and I kept trying to open them every time I blinked but it was hard.
Every time my eyes opened, his stayed closed. I might not be capable of feeling any physical pain but I felt so much pain inside of me. I felt the pain of losing him. I wanted to reach for him, I wanted to touch him, I wanted to say his name but I couldn't do anything. I could barely even open my eyes again.
Until I no longer found the strength to open my eyes, until mine stayed closed together with his. Our hands still holding one another and the tear still slowly rolling down when every feeling, every sound and every taste started to disappear. Everything got replaced by emptiness, by numbness.
The sun was shining so brightly and all the snow had disappeared. I stood outside of the lake house and looked around, trying to understand what had happened but I couldn't. I placed my hand on my chest to try and feel a heartbeat, to reassure myself it was all just a bad dream or simply my imagination. I couldn't feel a thing, no longer a heartbeat. I looked down at the light blue dress I was wearing, no longer the sweater, jeans and boots. I was alone infront of the house I loved but without the one I loved, without the guy that had made this house my home and my safe space.
I tried to panic about the situation but my mind was at peace, no chaos anymore.
I started walking towards the lake, my bare feet in the grass that was slightly wet and smelled like summer rain. I stopped and closed my eyes when I was halfway, I took in a deep breath and a small smile formed on my face. My favourite smell, my favourite place and my favourite dress. I opened my eyes again and I saw him. He was sitting on the small bench beside the lake and I ran over, as fast as I could. I wasn't in the best shape, I had never been, but I felt like I could run forever, no longer able to tire out my body.
"Luke!" I yelled when I came near him and he turned around to look at me before getting up, just in time to hold me when I reached him. He wrapped his arms around me so tightly and hid his face in the crook of my neck, breathing in my perfume. When I looked at him, I placed my hand on the side of his face where the glass of the windows had made a cut but I couldn't see a thing, there wasn't even a small scar left. I placed my hand on his chest and he didn't say a word, he looked down at me with sad eyes while I started to comprehend what was happening.
"Alice" he said softly to make me look at him, "You should have fought harder to stay alive. You still made a chance."
"There's no reason for me to be alive if I can't have you by my side." I said to him and he leaned his forehead against mine, I closed my eyes and enjoyed the peace in my mind.
"Forever and a day." He whispered before looking at me again, I looked back at him and allowed myself to get lost in his blue eyes. I allowed myself to stare and take it all in for as long as it lasted.
"Forever and a day, together."
