thank you for reading this basic cliche fanfic, it really means a lot to me
Russia laid awake. It was a little past two or three in the morning, and his body was buzzing too much for him to fall asleep. He knew drinking vodka before bed wasn't a good idea, but he still did it almost every night.
It didn't help that he had drank an entire cup of coffee at the cafe earlier, too. But he had eaten a bag of chips as well, so at least it wasn't on an empty stomach. He sat in the cafe until midnight, texting Germany, first just thanking him for coming over and helping take care of him, and then discussing how annoying certain teachers were and debating the finer points of Assassin's Creed and Grand Theft Auto.
The man running the cafe had eventually kicked Russia out a little past 12 so he could close up. Russia had simply wandered aimlessly, telling Germany to go to sleep before messaging Ukraine for a few minutes, double, triple, and quadruple texting him, Ukraine left him on read.
Once Russia felt he had wasted enough time, he headed back to his room, hoping America would be asleep. It wasn't that Russia completely hated him. It was just easier to avoid conversation with him at this point.
When he was in the dorm room, Russia had taken a few sips of vodka in the pitch black, downing one of those little vodka bottles that you find in the mini fridge at hotels. He wasn't sure why he had it, and he was pretty sure that he hadn't paid for it, but he drank it anyways. Then he had crawled in bed without changing clothes, and here he was.
He looked at the ceiling. From the other side of the room, America softly snored. His snoring had been really bad at the beginning of their rooming together, but after Russia had hit him multiple times in the middle of the night, America learned to quiet down.
Russia listened to America breathe. It was annoying.
Suddenly, he heard America turn over and mutter something. Russia twisted his body, peering into the darkness at America's bed. It wasn't weird to watch America sleep, Russia was just bored.
America made a sound that sounded suspiciously like a moan. Of course he'd be having a wet dream, gross.
Throwing his covers off, Russia stood up and yawned. He wasn't the slightest bit tired, although he knew that he would definitely be tired later, most likely during class. Maybe he should do something with all this awake-ness he had.
There was another sound from America's bed. He mumbled something, flipping over and whimpering. Russia ignored him, going to the window and opening the curtains. There was no moon out tonight, but even if there was, thin clouds were shielding the sky. There were little lights some distance away, some from street lamps and others from people's rooms.
America whimpered again, muttering a distinct 'no' as Russia turned to look at him. Curious, he walked over, towering over America's sleeping form. The smaller country seemed to be shivering under his blankets, gasping for air.
A bad dream? "Hey, Meri," Russia bent down and tapped his shoulder.
America flinched.
"Meri, wake up." Russia shook his shoulder a bit.
"Get off me!" America yelped, jerking up and waving his fists blindly. He managed to hit Russia in the face before the other grabbed his flailing arms.
"Wake up!" He shook America maybe a little too harshly, and America's eyes snapped open.
"What-" he gasped, making eye contact with Russia and ripping his arms out of his hands, scooting back. "You..." America heaved a breath and closed his eyes. "Oh, it's just you."
"Yeah, just me," Russia arched an eyebrow curiously. "Nightmare?"
America opened his eyes, looking down as he rubbed his wrist. "I guess."
Russia didn't bother asking what it was about. He didn't need to know. "Okay, well--"
America gasped, interrupting him. "Your nose!"
"Huh? What about it?"
"It's bleeding!" America exclaimed, suddenly leaning forward, interested. Russia leaned away.
"Well, you did hit me-"
"Let me help!" America jumped out of bed and ran to the bathroom. Russia heard running water before America returned, equipped with a wet washcloth. "Kneel," America instructed, pointing at Russia. Russia rolled his eyes and did so. He was too tired to argue.
America sat on his bed as Russia knelt in front of him. "I can do it myself," Russia muttered as America wiped the damp washcloth under his nose.
""I feel bad for... uh, rocking your shit," America said apologetically. "I had no idea I was so strong."
"You're not, it was just a lucky shot," Russia winced as America poked his nose with the washcloth. "It's not like you broke my nose or anything - then I'd be impressed."
"Oh!" America pulled away from Russia, rolling his shoulder. "Should I try again then?"
Russia rolled his eyes for the second time and snatched the washcloth from America. "Next time I won't wake you up."
America went quiet. "You won't?" he asked in a small voice.
Russia pressed the washcloth under his nose and then looked at it, satisfied that the bleeding had stopped. "Should I?"
"Yes!!"
"Why?"
There was a long silence.
"Look," Russia finally said. "I'll wake you up if you have another nightmare, okay? I don't hate you. It's more of a vague dislike, honestly, but I don't hate you. I appreciate you trying to help me today, even though you did nothing."
He didn't appreciate America's efforts. Russia didn't care about their relationship. He was only saying this because he was rooming with the damn guy, and he really didn't want to have to choke on the unrest between them for the remainder of the year.
Russia brought the washcloth back to the bathroom, washing it and wringing it out before leaving it next to the shower. Then he went back to his bed, laying down and settling in.
"...Does that mean we can sit together at breakfast tomorrow?" America asked hopefully.
"No." How had America gotten 'I want to be friends' from Russia's saying 'I dislike you'? Stupid American.
America made a disappointed noise, lying back down. Russia ignored it.
