Chapter 2:
Sun, Moon, Light, Dark
Eclipse, Solar, and Lunar sat on the couch, Eclipse’s mother sitting across from them.
“So,” Eclipse said. “Solar, have you decided on any prizes, yet?”
Solar frowned, leaning back into the couch. “Hmm… Uh, Eclipse, you said that you just moved here, right?”
Eclipse nodded.“Me and Lunar are about to start our Pokemon journey,” Solar began. “Maybe Eclipse can come with us? It would really help her get to know the Lumens region, and plenty of kids our age and even younger are doing it!”
Lunar nodded in agreement.
Eclipse’s mother shifted in her seat, and hummed deep in thought. She slowly nodded. “Yes. Yes, that would be a great idea. Where’s the lab in this region, to get starters?”
“It’s in Alpha Town,” Lunar said. “Professor Sakura runs it. This year, she’s giving out four starters instead of the traditional three. Me and Solar were already going to get two of them, and we’re allowed to bring along two friends. Problem is, we didn’t know anyone who was old enough to go, or who wasn’t already traveling, or who actually wanted to go.”
“Okay, but how are you going to get there? I forbid Eclipse to roller skate all the way to Alpha Town!” Eclipse’s mother fretted.
“Oh! Professor Sakura gave us four tickets for the Gogoat Express. Here, Eclipse, you can have one,” Solar said, placing a small piece of paper with a Gogoat and smiling rider in Eclipse’s palm.
Eclipse smiled slightly.
Lunar checked his Pokecell’s Watch app, and frowned. “Solar, we’ve got to go. See you at the lab, Eclipse.”
Solar waved, and the two walked out.
“Well, good thing I haven’t actually unpacked yet. I can just grab a bag and be on my way,” Eclipse said, standing up.
“Be safe, dear. Oh, and…” the older woman held up a cross between a Pokeball and a high tech smartphone, almost identical to Eclipse’s. “I have a Pokecell too, now! I’ve gotten it all set up, so now you have no reason not to call me if you need any help.”
Eclipse ducked into her room, and grabbed a backpack she knew had enough clothes for a week, some snacks in it, and a few books for entertainment.
When Eclipse neared the door to the hallway, she paused.
She had heard the rumours. Once you started your Pokemon journey, you were officially on the way to maturing and growing up. No matter what happened, you were going to change forever.
Eclipse glanced back over her shoulder. “...Bye, Mom,” she said, almost inaudibly, then pushed the door open and stepped through. The door shut with a quiet click.
Eclipse’s mother slumped onto the couch, staring at her shiny new Pokecell. She was staring at the screen, her thumb ready to press a single name at a moment’s notice.
Such a small name.
Eclipse.
Eclipse looked uncertainly at the large goat Pokemon, and it looked back at her, just as uncertainly. “Gooooooo,” it bleated.
Eclipse grabbed its horns in her hands, and swung one leg over before adjusting herself to sit more comfortably on the Gogoat.
