Eclipse raced out of Alpha Town on her skates, clutching Mango’s pokeball tightly in her hand. She knew there were plenty of wild Pokemon and rookie trainers on Nova Lane, to Anima Town. However, oddly, there didn’t seem to be any on the route at the moment.

Huh. That’s odd, she thought. Then a smirk spread across her face. Just means we can challenge Ashley right away, instead of stopping at the Pokemon Center first! I bet Mango’s strong enough without the extra training, anyways!

Eclipse arrived in Anima Town rather quickly, and immediately located the Gym. It was right next to the Pokemon Center, and easily the largest building in the small town. She strode right into it.

A Gothitelle seemed to materialize beside Eclipse, causing the girl to jump.

Greeting, challenger. I am Advanced Virtual Assistant. You may call me Ava,” the Gothitelle said in a mechanical voice. “What is your name, challenger?

“Uh, my name is Eclipse,” Eclipse said, not quite over the oddity of the Gothitelle.

There was a slight whirring sound, and then a beep. “Challenger registered. Best of luck in facing Ashley.

Eclipse strode out to a small platform raised slightly above the battlefield. There was a low glass wall around, presumably to protect the trainers from being hurt by the Pokemon’s attacks.

“Hello! Are you the challenger!”

Eclipse looked up from examining the platform. A young woman around 25 years old was standing in the platform at the other side of the battlefield. It was hard to make out the deatils on her outfit, but she seemed to have a dress and cloak that looked like it was woven from leaves. There was a large pink flower behind one of her ears.

“Yeah! I am!” Eclipse yelled back.

Challenger Eclipse!” Ava affirmed.

“Okay! I’m the gym leader, Ashley!” the woman yelled back. “Some people think plant Pokemon are slow and weak just because of how grass and trees can’t fight back. But I’m going to prove them all wrong, with my beautiful team of Grass types! Go, Drifkit!”

Ashley threw a pokeball out onto the field. A small, strange Pokemon emerged from it.

It was catlike, and light brown. It had leaf green eyes, and a white fluffy mane from which poked out two feet and a tail. A fluffy white dandelion seed protruded from the Pokemon’s head.

“Kiiiiiiiiit!” the Pokemon meowed happily.

“Go, Mango! Thorny Snare!”

“Leeeeeeeeeee!”

“Drifkit, Splash!” Ashley commanded, cooly.

“...Splash? Seriously?” Eclipse asked, wondering if the gym leader had gone insane.

As thorny vines erupted from the ground around Drifkit, the little kitten Pokemon leaped into the air, gliding gracefully above the vines thanks to its light weight and fluff.

“Wait, you can do that? That’s unfair!” Eclipse complained.

“Leef!” Mango agreed.

“It’s not unfair. You obviously didn’t do your research before coming here,” Ashley said, grinning. “Drifkits aren’t just Grass types. They’re Grass/Flying /i/dual/i/ types, and therefore immune to moves like Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and yes, Thorny Snare. Now, Drifkit! Scratch!”

“Kiiiiiiiiit!” Drifkit purred, swiping at Mango.

“Leef! Leef, leef!” Mango hissed, trying to dodge and instead falling into his own Thorny Snare. “SALEEF!”
