Will was fed up with Nico. That kid was so dense even the most obvious flirting went over his head. Nico, on the other hand, was irritated with Will. He was crushing on him. Hard. At first, he thought Will was just attractive and infuriating. After spending more and more time with his friend, the crush grew.
Then, early one morning, there was a knock on the door of the Hades cabin. Nico was not, under any circumstances, a morning person. He stayed where he was, in his stupid vampire coffin, in hopes that whoever was knocking would go away. No such luck. After a pause, the knocking started up again, louder this time. "I'm going, I'm going!" Nico shouted angrily, now convinced it was Will who was annoying him at this ungodly hour.
...
Their walk was not going as Will had planned. First, he had to convince Nico to come out onto the beach. Then, about 10 minutes into what was supposed to be their first date, they were arguing. Oh, not a full blown fight or anything. After the Giant War- and those three days,- the two had become... friends. Will and Nico were telling each other things (even though Nico hadn't opened up about one particular secret).
"You're so infuriating!" Will cried, snapping. Hurt flickered across the younger boy's eyes, but he remained impassive. "Me? Infuriating?" He kept his voice low, calm, and dangerous. "That's rich coming from you." Will stared at him, almost in disbelief. "Don't. How dense can you get? Can't you tell I-" well, there was no stopping now, was there? "like you?" He hissed. It was pretty loud for a hiss.
"What?" Nico asked, surprised. He searched Will's face. If this was a joke, it wasn't a very nice one. "Why?" Then he became dark again. "Will, no one likes me. Not really." "Can you stop saying that? I'm telling you I do!" "Fine, maybe you do. Maybe you're telling the truth. Maybe-" No. Will was not going to let him continue his whole melodrama thing. He had had enough. He looked Nico dead in the eyes, unafraid. "You know what I mean by 'like.'" He said pointedly, yet softly. Could he do nothing but argue with the son of Hades?
Nico relaxed his glare. "Oh." Gods, he sounded like Percy. "That's good, I suppose." Will's stomach twisted into knots. He gave the younger boy a small grin. "Good?" The Italian blushed, very lightly. Was he smiling? Maybe he had been. Then it went away as he tried to gather his thoughts and string his words together.
"Yes, good. It means positive, Solace." Will was grinning like mad now. "Good how?" That little schist was going to be the death of Nico. Even if his friend- his male friend- liked him, he was still unsure how to tell him he had a crush on him. Hadn't Jason and Annabeth been perfectly okay with it? But... that was Jason and Annabeth. The temperature dropped and the air became darker.
"Well. You see, I've only ever... I... used to have a crush on Percy..." Why did he have to go and say that? "But, ah... Well, that doesn't matter. Because... you... Look, I like you, too." It was now just plain cold and dark. He laughed bitterly. "Isn't that ironic, Will?" A pause. That little voice inside his head tormented him. It always had. Gaaay, it sang. "I can't do this. I'm sorry." The son of Hades turned around and started to walk back up the hill.
Why had it been so much easier to admit to Percy he had a crush on him? He just went, got it over with, and left. He was always leaving. But... He was over Percy. His crush on Will was current. and Percy was with Annabeth. Nico was honestly happy for them. With Will there was that small hope that something might happen. That Will wouldn't run away. That Will would be the family, the home he never had. And he blew it. He freaking blew it. Nico walked faster.
I'm not letting Nico get away again, Will thought as he ran after the kid. Maybe he should turn into the guy everyone knew and loved: laid-back, easy going. The kind of guy that would give Nico time to cool down and not run after him. But after Nico's first dissappearance, he decided he should keep an eye on him. He was worried about him. "Nico! Come back!"
Will burst through the trees. The son of Hades whirled around to face him. As he did, the older boy took advantage of the moment and reached out to grab his hands. Nico quickly withdrew them and stuffed them in his pockets, looking uncomfortable. "Don't touch me." "Sorry Nico. I'm really sorry. Very sorry. I shouldn't have just, you know-" Will rambled. "It's cool, Solace." Nico replied, looking down. Gods, he just wanted to hug the blond. And he didn't even like hugs. "Nico..." Will answered, causing Nico's stomach to fill with those skeletal butterflies.
"Are you okay?" "Yes." "Are you sure?" "Will," Nico protested. Only it sounded like a warning. He wasn't a baby. "Okay, okay." The son of Apollo said, crouching down to look Nico in the eys. "Hey? Can I- can I kiss you?" Nico tensed. Every cell in his body was yelling at Will to get out of his personal space. Except perhaps the cells in his lips. "It would be my first kiss..." Nico said, meaning, do you really want to?
"That's the reason I'm asking you. Besides, it'll make you feel better. I'm a doctor." Hurt, anger, sadness... They rolled off Nico. And they stayed off Nico. Finally, he looked up. "Yes." Will finished leaning in. Their lips met. For a second, Nico stood there, tense and paralyzed. Finally, he kissed back, shutting his eyes and wrapping his arms around Will's neck.
And when they broke apart, Will burst out laughing at Nico: beet red and still with his eyes squeazed shut.
The End.
