Chapter 1

I woke up with a pounding headache. My eyes peeled open, but I couldn't see my surroundings. I felt like I was in motion going upwards in some sort of lift. I placed my hands in front of me to see if there were any walls nearby. I felt around a bit, realizing I was in some type of box, and I backed myself into a corner, hugging my knees to my chest tightly.

I tried to remember why I had been put in this box, or elevator, or whatever it was. I couldn't recall anything. Panic seized me, and I felt the pounding in my head worsen. Nausea overcame me as I tried to grasp control over the situation.

What was my name? Why couldn't I remember my name? Who put me here?

I let out a scream, my voice coming out shrill.

"HELP ME! IS ANYONE THERE? HELP!"

I continued to scream until I lurched forward suddenly. My arms caught my fall, and my elbows skidded on the rough floor.

Grunting, I pushed myself up and looked up at the ceiling. My eyes had adjusted slightly to the pressing darkness, and I could just make out the ceiling, which seemed to be about eight feet tall.

As I began to inspect the walls for a way out, a line of light cut through the darkness. It grew slowly, brightening until I had to squint my eyes and cover them. I heard murmuring from above me.

"Who's the shank?"

"Man this dude's got long hair."

"Wait, that's not a dude!"

"A girl?"

"What's with the greenie?"

"A shucking girl?"

"Hope you enjoyed the one way ticket up."

"Ain't no going back."

The mutters continued and I stayed still, facing myself carefully away from the light. Suddenly, I heard a loud voice call for silence, and the doors above me opened all the way. I turned myself towards the light now, squinting up into the bright sun.

When I could finally open my eyes, I could see about forty or fifty boys crowded around the top of the box I was in. They were all peering curiously down at me, quietly talking among themselves. I shrank back into the corner.

A boy with dark skin who looked to be about 16 or 17 lowered a rope slowly down into the box.

He was muttering to himself, looking extremely confused.

The rope had a loop at the end of it, which I supposed would be for me to grab onto in order to get out of the box. I looked at it, unmoving.

The boy finally looked down directly at me, and shook the rope lightly.

"Get on so we can figure this the shuck out."

I didn't know what he meant, and I realized suddenly that there was a lack of girls around the box. I stood up slowly, bracing myself on the wall. I grabbed the rope with both hands and hoisted myself up. I put both my feet into the loop and held on as I was pulled upward.

The crowd around me fell silent as I was helped into the soft grass. I noticed immediately we seemed to be in a huge box of sorts, with and exit at each side, north, south, east, and west. I looked directly at the boy who helped me out of the box and then looked around at everyone else.

"Why can't I remember?"

The boy had a twinge of annoyance on his face as he answered, "Ain't nobody remembers klunk on the first day greenie. The tour comes tomorrow, I'll answer all your questions then."

I opened my mouth to ask another question, feeling rejected. I realized he wasn't going to let me ask any more questions. The boys around me were staring at me. When I attempted to make eye contact with them, they looked away. I opened my mouth once more, but then closed it.

I fell silent as panic began to consume me once more. I felt dizzy all the sudden. I tried to find a place to sit, but boys were surrounding me from all sides. My breathing became erratic and I felt myself gasping. The boy looked at me curiously and then asked if I was alright. I struggled to take in air, breathing heavily.

I felt as if I was underwater and I couldn't hear him. My vision became fuzzy around the edges and my legs collapsed underneath me. I fell backwards into someone's arms, and looked up to see a mess of dirty blonde hair above me. The boy who caught me had a concerned look on his face, and was talking to the other boy quietly.

I heard the words "overwhelmed", "greenie", and "girl" before the panic took over and I passed out.

When I came to, I was lying comfortably on a cot, with blankets pulled up to my chin. I was about to settle back comfortably into the covers, when I remembered why I was there in the first place.

I began panicking again, and threw the covers off. I tried to start getting up to leave, when a pair of arms came and held me down steadily.

"I'm Jeff, one of the medics. You passed out and need to get some rest before tomorrow. It's okay, you're safe here."

I began to shake, sobs wracking me body. I just wanted to go home. I was so scared.

Jeff gently laid me down and let me cry, and I eventually fell into a deep sleep. As I drifted off, a single word popped into my head. Olivia.
